Fire Damages Westside Elgin Property

600 Block of S. State

Elgin, IL – On Monday, May 9, 2022, just after 7:00 p.m., members of the Elgin Fire Department responded to the 600 block of South State St. for a report of a possible structure fire.

Responding fire companies found a two story business with fire burning through broken windows on the first floor.  The first crew arrived on scene in just under five minutes.  Fire crews deployed two hand lines to extinguish the fire. The fire was brought under control approximately twenty minutes after the arrival of the Fire Department. The building suffered extensive damage to the first floor. Initial damage estimates are between $80,000 and $100,000.

The business was unoccupied and vacant at the time of the fire. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries due to the fire. The building was red-tagged as it is uninhabitable and Code Enforcement was notified for follow-up. The Elgin Fire Department Fire Investigation Team is investigating.

A Tip from Chief Cagann:

Make sure you have properly installed and maintained smoke detectors in your home and/or business. Smoke detectors are the first line of defense during a fire event. Test smoke detectors each month and make a habit of changing the batteries twice a year, like when you change your clocks.
