Neighbourhood Watch in
Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby

eNewsletter #553 - 17 May 2022

This weekly eNewsletter is compiled by Neighbourhood Watch volunteers as a service for residents in Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby council areas. The eNewsletter is a new type of Neighbourhood Watch; utilising the available technology to keep people more connected and up-to-date with local crime and safety issues.

The eNewsletter includes a selection of posts from our local police at the Ku-ring-gai PAC Facebook page (also known as 'eyewatch'), primarily for those not familiar with Facebook. We add anything interesting from a Neighbourhood Watch point-of-view - this could be a local newspaper article, a roadwork warning, crime prevention tip(s), an upcoming Neighbourhood Watch meeting, Q&As from residents, or an item from another Police command ("Crooks know no boundaries!").

🚓 Have you seen anything we should share with the community?
Please email our NHW in Ku-ring-gai & Hornsby volunteers. We do value your contributions and thank you for your support.
🚓 Please feel free to share/forward this eNewsletter with your friends, family, colleagues and neighbours.

14 May, from Traffic and Highway Patrol Command - NSW Police Force: Driving Tip:

If you are going to turn and you brake before you activate your indicator, you aren't giving sufficient notice.
Indicators, as the name implies, are to indicate your intention! If you brake first, you already know your intention, so you should have been signalling already.
Also, most people get annoyed when you change lanes and your indicator only flashes once. When changing lanes, the NSW Road Rules require that an indicator be used for 'long enough to give sufficient warning', or if pulling out from a stationary position, for a minimum of 5 seconds.
Consider the distance of the vehicles in front and behind you. If you won't have a safe following distance from the vehicle in front, or leave one for the vehicle you are about to pull in front of, reconsider changing lanes.
Roundabouts - Indicate left to turn left - Right to turn right - when on roundabout signal left when exiting (including going straight ahead). If unsure, watch this video.
14 May, Shared with permission from the Pymble and West Pymble Community group:
I should have posted here last night- around. At 12:50am I wake up to the sound of voices outside.
My dog let of a bunch of fierce barks like I’ve not heard from him and whoever it was scampered off.
I’ve called the police station to get them to do a patrol because whoever it was was up to no good.
I hope whoever it was got spooked enough to go home and think about their life choices.
I hope you’re all safe as well. Keep you’re doors locked! 💕💐

Regularly check your wheat bag for signs of wear and tear or scorching. With age, the fillings dry out and become combustible.
Wheat bags can ignite and are not designed to replace hot water bottles for warming beds.

11 May, from Crime Stoppers, NSW

Stealing from vehicles is a high-volume crime in NSW.
The items most commonly stolen from vehicles include:
➡️ Number plates
➡️ Cash
➡️ Wallets (including bank cards and licences)
➡️ GPS devices
➡️ Electronic devices including mobile phones, tablets and other small items.
Generally, a vehicle is a target because the items stolen are visible from the outside.
Unlocked doors also make it easy for curious criminals to enter your vehicle without creating much noise or commotion.
Make sure you remove all valuables from your vehicle and always lock your doors!

From NHW in Ku-ring-gai & Hornsby: 'Our 20 Favourite Crime Prevention Tips for Pedestrians'

Tip #1. MAKE EYE CONTACT with drivers before crossing any road, even on a pedestrian crossing. Parents – teach your kids this life skill. Just because someone else decides to cross, doesn’t mean it’s safe for you. Your life – your decision.
Tip #3. PUT AWAY YOUR PHONE. Unplug your earphones. Give all senses to the job of keeping you safe. Concentrate whilst you are on that road. Pause any involved conversations with those near you. 100% concentration please!
Tip #8. WAIT FOR THE WALK SIGNAL at traffic lights and pedestrian crossings. Do not enter the road if the red ‘Don’t walk’ signal shows, flashing or otherwise. Beware adjacent crossings having similar ‘Walk’ sounds – you may start to cross prematurely, by mistakenly hearing the other crossing’s ‘Walk’ signal – easily done!
Tip #15. REFUGE ISLANDS ARE NOT PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS. Please do not treat them as such. They are to help you cross the road in two stages, when traffic is busy or the road is wide. A driver should not stop for you at these islands.
