Weekly Round Up

Round 5

this week.

We host Korumburra-Bena this week in another tough encounter for our club. Our recent history has shown that both senior sides match up well against each other and the games are always interesting.

LAST WEEK
The seniors battled Nar Nar Goon for the annual Cunningham Cup. It was a wet, dark day down at Nar Nar Goon. It was a hard hitting physical contest with plenty of action on the ground.

We started off really well matching the opposition around the ground. Unfortunately though poor kicking early really put us on the back foot for the majority of the game. Unfortunately we ran out of players and played with seventeen players on the field and sixteen players for the majority of the fourth quarter due to injuries and illness in the last quarter.

Our better players for the game included Heath Briggs who led the tackle count. Dillan Bass continued his impressive season down back. Chris Johnson played with his usual physical presence in the mid field. Luke Ryan and Tristan Warkuss played great roles in the back line. It was great to see Brady White back from injury playing his usual effective game in the mid field. There is a reason why most of our best players were in defence because the forwards did not see a lot of the ball for the whole game.

We wish Luke Hartley a speedy recovery as he spent the night in the hospital emergency ward. Thanks very much to our junior players who “filled in” for the team after Thursday night’s selections due to last minute withdrawals due to illness.

development team.

The Development Team tried hard in a team severely depleted by illness and players being asked to play seniors.

They are playing a good brand of football with the die- hard veterans such as Travis Ramsdale being at the bottom of every pack. We welcomed back Tom Arnett after injury and illness and he provided a welcome addition to our team with his willingness to become involved in every contest and provide opportunities for the players around him. Corey Brook was a main stay in defence again and cleared the ball out many times with his marking ability and his long raking left foot kicks. Matthew Ferguson tried hard around the contest all game and Liam Taylor was prominent in the mid field. His speed was used to good effect on many occasions. Nicholas Brooks also came under notice but the opposition was far too strong and accomplished.

We are hoping for a more settled team in the coming weeks.

thirds.

With the weather not looking promising it was important to try get off to a good start and get the game going our way. That didn’t really pan out and it really set the standard for the whole match, with both teams really slugging it out and having moments with the game under their control.

The scores were close all day and really required which ever team had the momentum at the time to take their opportunities.
It was in the 3rd quarter when we were able to get a little break on Nar Nar Goon and went in to ¾ time with our noses just a little in front.

Working into the wind in the last quarter, it required the boys to play really smart and use the footy constructively to get territory and try take the game away from them.
We got ourselves about 20 points clear with not long left on the clock, after a nice goal from Max McDermott which put the game safely in our grasp. To Nar Nar Goons credit they continued to work hard and were able to get a late goal after a loss of concentration & skill error, however we were able to get the win.

It was important for us to get back on the winners list after 2 straight losses and was a great effort from the boys considering we had 3 strong players missing due to senior selection and injury.

Strong players on the day were Flynn Aballah out on his wing, Ryder Milne, Owen Hartley & Piper Pichatree were all strong again down back, as was Logan Fox who played many different roles over the course of the match.
