Pilot program launches to sequester carbon and rejuvenate vegetation
Did you know that almost 90% of Western Australia's landscape is classed as rangelands? For many of us, these areas are often out of sight and mind, and when it comes to combatting climate change, we often think of things that can be done closer to home. However, exciting projects are emerging in the regions, including the State Government's $550,000 Southern Rangelands Revitalisation Project. This pilot program will have station owners across the Murchison, Goldfields, Gascoyne and Nullabor regions trialling a range of land management strategies and technologies with the aim to revive rangeland environments, sequester carbon and build business resilience.
Western Australia's rangelands have come under pressure from historic overgrazing and extreme climatic conditions. This has resulted in reduced vegetation and soil erosion. The Rangeland Rejuvenation Project will explore opportunities in carbon farming revegetation and reduce grazing pressure on sensitive or degraded areas. These activities will also allow pastoralists to earn carbon credits through the Commonwealth Government’s Emissions Reduction Fund. Known as human-induced regeneration, these projects rely on a reduction in grazing pressure, a stop to land clearing and revegetation only by natural seed stocks and lignotubers.
You can support regenerative agriculture practices right here in Perth by buying local, seasonal produce and keeping an eye out for brands/suppliers committed to regenerating the land while they farm.

The 2022 climate election
If May's federal election results are anything to go by, the Australian public can look forward to a boost in initiatives that focus on climate change mitigation and adaptation. The success of several 'teal' independents has been heralded as a "clear vote for more action on climate change", and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's election night speech included the message to end the climate wars. The Greens also polled strongly, increasing their representation in the Lower House from one MP to three and 12 out 76 seats in the Senate. Whatever their political persuasion, it was clear that this year, Aussies were voting with climate front of mind.
On a State level, the WA government's response to climate change includes a 2022-23 budget $500 million boost to the State's Climate Action Fund, almost $60 million toward hydrogen or electric vehicle rebates and EV charging infrastructure and $31 million for climate action research and planning.
Voting is an excellent example of how you can use your voice (or vote) to make a difference on climate action! Every vote, every letter, every conversation, every choice - can and does make a difference! Together we can continue to drive a sustainable future.
