The Opportunity Scholars initiative has released this report, authored by several scholars to share the experiences of several students who have been impacted by the carceral system as they pursue post-secondary education, as well as recommendations for the academic community on how to better support this population.
April was Second Chance Month so there are several reentry related resources to share this month, like this guide from OJJDP which features practical tips, simple explanations, and customizable content for those working with youth and adults preparing for reentry. 

Research

The Othering and Belonging Institute has released their Inclusiveness Index for 2021 which is a gauge of the degree of inclusivity experienced by marginalized groups in a particular place. See the rankings here or learn more here.

Practice

The Maine Department of Education’s (DOE) Maine School Safety Center's first annual Maine School Safety Summit is happening June 21-23 at Windham High School. This high level, diverse training opportunity catered specifically for school and district administrators, school resources officers, juvenile community corrections officers, and law enforcement that work directly with schools, in addition to school support staff such as school counselors, social workers, school nurses, and emergency planning and facilities school/district staff members. Also, the Reentry 2030 site has been launched with information about this national initiative that seeks to support better reentry and reintegration outcomes. The initiative is is a partnership between the Correctional Leaders Association, The Council of State Governments Justice Center (CSG), and JustLeadershipUSA. Learn more here.

Updates from the past month:

Region 1: Two care team reviews were conducted at the April meeting.  One youth was in need of housing, mental health supports, and employment assistance and another youth was in need of access to pro-social activities, mental health supports, and job readiness skills.
Region 2: Region 2 work plan discussion.
Region 3: Presentation on initiatives happening to combat substance use disorder, continuation of Region 3 work plan discussion, and discussion of transition plan for Galan Williamson's retirement.

In appreciation of the considerable contributions Galan has made to the Regional Care Team initiative, we are sharing his words: "Leaving DOC was a very difficult decision to make and one I’ve been contemplating for some time and having a design role with Regional Care Teams statewide and facilitator role specific to Region 3 has been so rewarding. Meeting with each of you monthly, learning from you all, and having direct impact on a number of clients referred to RCT has been a truly enjoyable initiative. I deeply appreciate the dedication, commitment, caring and knowledge you brought to each meeting. You are all incredible professionals and people and I feel honored and privileged to have been a part of Region 3 RCT over the past 2 years."

Thank you Galan and best of luck in your future role as Executive Director of Northeastern Workforce Development Board!
