CARES Act & FY 2021 Spending Resources & Reminders

With the end of the fiscal year fast approaching, there are less than six months left to obligate your CSBG CARES Act Supplemental Funding and FY 2021 CSBG regular funding before the September 30, 2022 obligation deadline. Ensuring every dollar of CSBG funding is effectively invested on behalf of low income families is critical to our Tribal communities. The Maximizing the Impact of CSBG Regular & CARES Act Supplemental Funding session held during the CSBG Tribal Network 2022 Annual Meeting offered some excellent ideas for expending regular CSBG & CARES Act funding. Check out the session recording and slide deck for more information.

Here are just a few of the ways CSBG dollars can be utilized that were highlighted in the session:
  • Consumer Supports - food, school supplies, transportation - gas, car repairs/maintenance, and public transportation cards
  • Children & Youth Activities - summer camps, sports, culture & arts camps, language schools, and scholarships
  • Emergency/Crisis Assistance - collaborations with LIHEAP, LIHWAP, ERA
  • Employment and Job Training - enhanced child care access to support employment, collaboration with other programs, training enrollment fees
  • Health and Wellness Activities - doctor visit co-pays, transportation expenses,
  • Housing - rent, mortgage and utility assistance, and repairs
  • Organizational Capacity - training, support, organizational preparedness, upgrading policies and procedures
  • Pop Up Events - food distribution, baby items, school supplies
  • Tribal Small Business Supports - PPE to childcare centers/homes, coaching to low-income entrepreneurs, and mentorship programs
  • Technology - improved capacity for organization, families, and students
  • Community/Client Engagement - Pay low-income clients or independent contractor to hold focus groups to assess post-pandemic needs, conduct door-to-door community outreach campaigns, or establish robust client advisory groups

FY 2022 CSBG Remaining Funds Released

The Office of Community Services (OCS) announced the release of the remaining FY 2022 CSBG funding through a Dear Colleague Letter published on May 6, 2022. It was noted that the allocation amounts currently reflect a 1% reduction due to the Secretary's authority to transfer funding to HHS's discretionary accounts.

OCS Celebrates Community Action Month

We See You! On behalf of the Administration for Children and Families (ACF), Office of Community Services (OCS), the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) is excited to spend the month of May celebrating the life-changing work of the CSBG Network, including CSBG Tribal grant recipients!

This year, CSBG wanted to introduce a theme for Community Action Month that embodies gratitude for the transformative impact of our CSBG programs on vulnerable communities. The theme is “We See You.”

  • Too often those on the frontlines go unseen and not acknowledged.  You demonstrate everyday resilience and commitment to service.
  • CSBG sees the ways in which programs have responded in flexible and innovative ways to augment community needs amid the COVID-10 pandemic.
  • CSBG sees that programs have been on the ground in the wake of natural disasters, braiding and blending funds with state partners to meet emergent need.
  • CSBG sees Tribal Administrators, State Associations, and the National Training and Technical Partners amplifying the goals of CSBG and focusing on strategies to help move the most vulnerable individuals and families out of poverty to build stronger communities.
  • CSBG sees the Network’s commitment to equitable practices while eliminating the causes and consequences of poverty.

Throughout the month of May, and beyond, CSBG plans to elevate the remarkable work of the CSBG Network.
