OSJ Action Alert: May 11, 2022

Invest in Humane Welcome

On April 1st, the Biden administration announced a planned end to Title 42 by May 23rd, 2022. Title 42, a part of U.S. public health code, has been used to expel more than 1.7 million vulnerable people seeking refuge at the U.S. southern border during the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, some lawmakers are looking to override the administration’s decision by forcing a vote on legislation that would continue the policy. This vote could happen as early as this week.

The Public Health and Border Security Act of 2022 would make it near impossible to rescind Title 42 and would force the CDC and DHS to keep border expulsions in place—contradicting analyses that have found no relationship between the number of expulsions under Title 42 and the number of Covid-19 cases in the U.S., and despite fact that seeking asylum is a legal and human right.

Join us and our partners at Church World Service in urging Members of Congress to hold the Biden Administration accountable in ending Title 42 and reject any anti-asylum proposal that would keep Title 42 in place.
