Hello Friends!

We have exciting news and events to share, but first want to address a more serious matter that occurred last month. Some of you might have heard about a very disturbing racist incident that occurred at the CPW Partners in the Outdoors Conference held in Vail last month. One of our staff members was in attendance at the event. This article from the Colorado Sun discusses what happened.

We cannot condone actions like these and we strongly urge CPW to undertake the work necessary to address this incident and the systematic structures that have allowed the atmosphere that created it. At WSCC, we may not always get it right, and may miss opportunities to be better allies for those who are subjected to racism and other forms of oppression. But we are committed to doing the work and making the world, and the world of conservation in Colorado, more welcoming and inclusive to all. If you have any thoughts about this, please do not hesitate to let me know: tanya@theconservationcenter.org.

Part of feeling comfortable outside is having fun, enjoyable, and memorable experiences. Part of being an advocate for conservation is knowing the issues. We hope that we have made a positive impression that will last on some of Delta Counties 3rd graders last week. All 3rd graders were invited to participate in Conservation Days where partner groups came to lead education stations teaching about flora, fauna, watershed functions, outdoor safety and more! Thank you to The Nature Connection, Delta County Schools, teachers, partners, sponsors and volunteers for bringing this event back after a two year COVID hiatus. See more below.

Hopefully, a few of the young students will grow up to make trips to our state capitol urging passage of legislation that protects our resources - something our Public Lands Director, Ben, did last week. Or they grow up to collect data helping us know if we are doing our job in keeping our waters clean and healthy like our RiverWatch crew under the steady leadership of our Watershed Director, Jake.

We are also excited to bring back RiverFest for its 20th year on June 4th and 5th. We are looking for volunteers - especially certified boat captains and boats for our Sunday Fundraising Float. And if you run a business and want to help sponsor this event, we’d love to hear from you as well!  Check out the flyer at the end of this email - you'll soon be seeing it posted around town. Hope to see you there!

For the love of the land,

Tanya Henderson
Executive Director

May 28: Archeology Hike with John Zachman
We're still hammering out the details but expect this will be a moderate+ hike due to elevation gain along the trail. We will update the sign-up form with more info soon.

June 25: Paonia Springs Hike with Russ Zick

Join us for an educational outing to observe some of the springs that feed Paonia's drinking water system and talk about the city's water system, source water protection, and other conservation topics. Use this link for more information and to sign up.

Yay, our River Festival and Float Trip is almost here! June 4th-5th. See the event poster at the end of this email. We're also in the process of updating our website with additional details. Volunteer to help at River Fest!

We were thrilled to bring back Conservation Days on May 4th and 5th after a two-year hiatus, but Delta County’s third grade teachers were even more thrilled! The Delta County Independent covered the event and published a great article in their May 11 edition, also available at this link: https://bit.ly/3ys0LJV

This event could not happen without all of the Conservation Heros who stepped up to provide engaging and educational activities for the kids. They are the true heart and soul of this event. A huge Thank You to all the selfless volunteers and representatives from the North Fork Historical Society, US Forest Service, Delta Conservation District, Solar Energy International, West Elk Search and Rescue, USFWS Hotchkiss Fish Hatchery and Colorado Parks and Wildlife. WSCC, together with our partners from The Nature Connection and Delta County Schools, are forever grateful for your efforts to nurture future generations of conservationists.

CORE Act Sees Movement in Senate

After decades of collaboration between diverse stakeholders, including ranchers, sportsmen, small business owners, veterans, local elected officials, outdoor recreation organizations, and water and energy groups, the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee - the committee that oversees public lands legislation - took up the CORE Act in an official “mark-up,” a critical step toward advancing the bill in the Senate. Along with Congressman Neguse, Senators Bennet and Hickenlooper have been champions of the bill. Today’s mark-up is the result of their dedicated work and reflects the clear desires of local communities to have these lands protected in perpetuity. Please join our friends at Wilderness Workshop in thanking Senator Bennet and Senator Hickenlooper on their efforts to get this bill to the finish line.

Gunnison Public Lands Initiative

For the past several years, a coalition of organizations have been working in Gunnison County to protect public lands, enhance a strong and sustainable economy, and support historic uses of public lands. Called the Gunnison Public Lands Initiative (GPLI), this coalition is building a community proposal that builds upon the common ground between all of the members and provides a carefully vetted, deliberative vision for the future of public lands in Gunnison County. WSCC has been a long-time supporter of this coalition and work. To find out more about GPLI, follow the link below.

Quick Recap of Happenings at our State Legislature

Last week, Ben Katz, WSCC’s Public Lands Program Director, and Pete Kolbenschlag, Executive Director of the Colorado Farm and Food Alliance, traveled to the Colorado state capitol to meet with legislators and discuss bills moving their way through the state legislature. With one day left in session, there is much left to do! Stay tuned for a full update next month.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Our River Park is looking pretty darn good these days. Just a few finishing touches left on the classroom structure, and soon you'll being seeing an artistic osprey's nesting pole crafted by the one and only Ira Houseweart.
One big reason the park is so lovely is because dedicated volunteers turn out once a month to help keep it that way. Our next workday on May 17 will focus on knocking back weeds, hanging a few signs and getting rid of exposed landscaping cloth along the trail.
Everyone is welcome to participate! Come join the fun!

Sign up for the May 17th River Park Workday
We are always looking for more voices on WSCC's Volunteer Committees! Our committees are critical to the success of our programs, organization, community, and environment. We meet once a month - email info@theconservationcenter.org for more information.

A big shout out to our Mike's Hikes trip leaders who led our first three hikes of the year - Julie Sapena, Betsy Johnson & Holly Bidle, and Bob Sapena. Same goes to our tireless River Park Workday volunteers (some are shown in the picture above) who removed three truck & trailer loads of yard debris from the museum grounds, and transported it to a property where it will be used to restore the soils and provide structure for garden beds.
