Becoming a family where everyone is on mission with Jesus.

Life Groups Newsletter

Dear Life Group family,

I love you and am grateful for my time serving the Lord as the Groups and Local Outreach Pastor at Willingdon.  Keep seeking God and His kingdom!  May your love for God increase and be seen through your love for others.  Keep believing the narrative that comes from Jesus.  Be led by the Spirit, grounded in the Bible, and go into our city to join on mission with Jesus.

Much love,
Pastor Brad

What do we mean by discipleship?
A disciple is simply someone who follows a teacher, in our case we follow Jesus. To be a disciple of Jesus simply means that we follow Jesus, are being changed by Jesus and guide others to Jesus.
  1. Disciple – someone who is following Jesus, being changed by Jesus, and is guiding others to Jesus (Matthew 4:19).
    1. Following Jesus: you have put your faith in Jesus, and you follow him.
    2. Changed by Jesus: you have a new identity. You are a member of the family of God. You are a servant of the King and have been sent out in the power of the Holy Spirit.
    3. Guiding others to Jesus: you have been given a mission by Jesus and now increasingly live in obedience to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

  1. Discipleship – is simply the state of being a disciple.  This word (like the word evangelism) is not in the Bible.  Unfortunately, in the North American Church, discipleship is typically seen as an educational process designed to orient new believers to the biblical and everyday practices of our churches – and so we often prefer the term disciple making.

  1. Disciple making – is entering into relationships to intentionally help people follow Jesus, be changed by Jesus, and join the mission of Jesus (Matt. 28:18-20).

  1. Disciple maker – a disciple of Jesus who enters into relationships with people to intentionally help them follow Jesus, be changed by Jesus, and guide others to Jesus.

Disciple making practices:
  1. Teach the disciple to self-feed (moving from milk to meat):
    1. Read the Bible and journal
    2. Leading of the Holy Spirit
    3. Prayer – speaking and listening
    4. Walk in obedience to the Bible and the Spirit
  2. Teach the disciple to participate in authentic community
    1. Mutual support and care
    2. Sharing of life issues, sins, hopes, pain, etc.
    3. Be together enough to rub off on each other
  3. Teach the disciple to serve God in his Kingdom mission
    1. Stewarding the gifts and resources God has given to us
    2. Stewarding our time
    3. Learning to put God and others first
  4. Teach the disciple to worship
    1. In time alone with God
    2. In smaller group settings
    3. In the gathered body of Christ
Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
