We have 7 updates to share with you in today's newsletter:

(1) New Job Opportunities: we have multiple full-time job opportunities available for our community.

(2) Girls Eid Night: join us tomorrow for games, henna and pizza at our next event for sisters ages 13 - 18.

(3) 40 Hadith of Imam Nawawi Memorization Competition: register today to win prizes totalling  $1,000!

(4) Running Club for Brothers: join us every Sunday starting May 22 to host a running activity for men and youth ages 16 and older this summer.

(5) Community Health Update: we have a blog post with information from Ottawa Public Health for our community.

(6) Vaccination Clinic: AMA is proud to hold a COVID-19 Vaccination hub in our centre.

(7) Community News: OPS is hiring new candidates with diverse skills, abilities and experiences.

#1. We're Hiring

You can apply to be a Program Coordinator at AMA. The deadline to apply is Friday, June 3.

Job Title: Program Coordinator

Job Description: This is position catered to youth who are between 15 to 30 years of age. You will be helping to prepare, manage, and evaluate AMA’s community activities during the summer. This position is funded by the Canada Summer Jobs program

#2. Girls Eid Night

Join us at our next Sisters event for Ages 13 - 18! We will be hosting various games, henna and dinner. We look forward to seeing you!

Here are the details:

Date: Friday, May 13

Time: 4:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Location: AMA Community Centre (1216 Hunt Club Rd)

Ages: Girls aged 13 - 18

Registration Deadline: Friday, May 13 at 8:00 AM

Admission Cost: $10

#3. 40 Hadith of Imam Nawawi Memorization Program

We will be hosting a memorization contest covering the life changing 40 hadith compiled by Imam An-Nawawi. These narrations cover a comprehensive array of key aspects of our faith that the great Imam believed everyone should know.

As you all know, memorization is ingrained in our Islamic tradition as a great way to protect, preserve and internalize knowledge. The competition will cover the hadith text in Arabic.

Here are the details:

Competition Date: Saturday, June 18

Location: In-person at Masjid Ar-Rahmah

Prizes: Prizes totalling 1000 CAD to be won!

Fee: The cost is free and everyone of all ages can join (brothers and sisters)

Exam Type: Oral Exam

Registration Deadline: Tuesday, May 31

#4. Running Club for Brothers

AMA is proud to host a running activity for men and youth to help meet health goals this summer!

The goal is to complete a 5 kilometre run or walk at one's own pace. We will be doing dynamic stretches pre- and post-run, and some strength exercises too.

Here are the details:

Date: Every Sunday starting May 22

Time: 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM

Ages: Men aged 16 and older

Start / End Location: AMA Community Centre (1216 Hunt Club Rd.)

Items to bring:

  • Comfortable running shoes
  • Water
Please remember to:
  • Dress for the weather
  • Do not have a heavy breakfast 2 hours before the activity
  • Eat any fruit prior to the activity

#6. AMA Public Health Neighborhood Vaccination Hub 

AMA will be facilitating a COVID-19 vaccination clinic every Tuesday - Thursday for Ottawa residents.

This program is to help reduce barriers for residents who have not yet received the vaccine. The hubs will work with community leaders to promote a comfortable, convenient, and easily accessible option for vaccination, as another step towards the goal of ensuring that anyone 5+ in Ottawa who wants a COVID-19 vaccine can get vaccinated.

You're eligible to receive the vaccine if you satisfy the following criteria:

  • First doses are available for Ottawa residents aged 5 years of age or older at the time of vaccination
  • Second doses are available for Ottawa residents aged 5 years of age or older who received their first dose of an mRNA vaccine at least 28 days before their appointment. Residents who received their first dose of AstraZeneca vaccine can receive an mRNA vaccine after 56 days
  • Third doses (booster doses) are available for Ottawa residents who are 18 years of age or older who received their second dose at least 3 months (84 days) ago

Here are the details for the pop-up vaccination clinic:

Date & Time: Every Tuesday - Thursday from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM

Appointment Type: No appointment is required to receive a vaccine or to speak with a Public Health nurse about COVID-19 vaccines.

If there is a waiting period, residents may receive an appointment card with a time to return to the clinic for their vaccine.

Vaccination offered: Pfizer-BioNtech and/or Moderna 

Location: AMA Community Centre (1216 Hunt Club Rd, Ottawa, ON K1V 2P1)

Items Required: One piece of government identification. This includes:

  • Health Card
  • Driver's License, Passport or any photo ID is accepted

#7. Community News

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) will be hiring 80 new sworn officers in 2022 to support the Service’s mandate as it faces retirements and other staffing needs.
 
A key focus of the OPS's hiring efforts will be to attract a talented cadre of candidates with diverse skills, abilities and experiences. In a continued effort to be more reflective of the diversity of the communities served, the outreach strategies will be designed to encourage increased applications for female, Indigenous, and racialized candidates.
 
To support this initiative the OPS Outreach and Recruitment Team will be hosting the following information sessions:
 
May 17 – Visit us during Police Week at the Pinecrest Recreation Centre, 2250 Torquay Avenue, from 4:00 - 7:00 PM
May 18 – Visit us during Police Week at Elizabeth Manley Park, 1261 Blohm Drive, from 4:00 - 7:00 PM
May 19 – Visit us during Police Week at Jules Morin Park, 400 Clarence Street, from 4:00 - 7:00 PM
June 8 – Monthly Recruiting Info Session, live on Instagram, from 6:30 - 7:30 PM
