ONE WEEK: May 19th @ 7pm ET via Zoom Dr. Justin Gest joins us for "Majority Minority" with BridgeUSA's Manu Meel

“The go-to source for understanding how demographic
change is impacting American politics.”
—Jonathan Capehart, The Washington Post and MSNBC

Rarely does a week go by that someone in the media doesn't refer to the impending shift in the demographics of America. Within two decades, it's expected that we'll be a majority minority country. But what does that even mean, exactly? And has anyone stopped to think how a society makes a transition like this successfully? Or were we just planning on winging it?  And, did you know that the NYPD might teach us a thing or two about how to succeed?

Lucky for us, our May 19th special guest hasn't just thought about it, he's studied it. Dr. Justin Gest will join us fresh off the release of his book "Majority Minority." Justin is an Associate Professor of Policy and Government at George Mason University’s Schar School. He is the author of six books, primarily on the politics of immigration and demographic change. And you might even recognize him from his
2017 visit to Tallahassee when he helped us understand the societal shifts that elected President Donald Trump (Justin saw the shift and wrote "The New Minority" way before "Hillbilly Elegy"). He is insightful, brilliant, and really a lot of fun to have a conversation with. We're teaming him up with our friend and colleague Manu Meel as facilitator, the CEO of BridgeUSA (a Village Square-like effort to bridge divisions on college campuses), who was recently named to Forbes 30 under 30.

TWO WEEKS: The Village Square and Leon County present Created Equal: A Conversation about Race in our Elections | Thursday, May 26 @ 5:30 pm

Are elections fair and secure for everyone? Should we be doing more?

Join a conversation that examines how national and statewide perspectives on voting access and security impact our local community. As a cornerstone of American Democracy, there is a fundamental link between trust in election infrastructure and equal access to the ballot box.

This year’s Created Equal program will address this question by connecting academic experts, community members, and advocates to look at voter security and the right for all people to vote. Meet our panelists: Dr. Sharon Austin of the University of Florida, Dr. Michael Morley of Florida State University, and Dr. Keith Parker of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, and our moderator Tom Flanigan of WFSU Public Media.

Join the discussion at the 7th Annual Created Equal on Thursday, May 26 at The Moon, 1105 E Lafayette St. Pizza, salad, and drinks will be provided at 5:30 p.m. The panel discussion will begin at 6 p.m., followed by table conversations among attendees. Register to reserve your free seat to join us.

Created Equal is part of the award-winning series The Club of Honest Citizens, a partnership with The Village Square and Leon County Government.
