Fugitive Casey White Captured
Convicted criminal Casey White was captured by police in Evansville, Indiana, on Monday after escaping Lauderdale County Jail in Alabama 11 days earlier. White and his prison guard accomplice, Vicky White (no relation), had remained mostly hidden in a motel room paid in cash by a third party in Evansville, but the convict was recognized at a car wash. As police closed in, Casey and Vicky attempted to escape by car, but police intentionally collided with their vehicle, preventing them from escaping by foot or starting a shootout. While police proceeded to arrest Casey White, Vicky White committed suicide on the scene with one of the guns the couple had with them. Casey White has been returned to Alabama, where he was already serving a 75-year sentence for attempted murder and is due to stand trial for another fatal stabbing.

Al Jazeera Journalist Killed
Veteran Al Jazeera journalist, 51-year-old Shireen Abu Akleh, was shot and killed Wednesday morning in Jenin, in the occupied West Bank. Circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately clear. Abu Akleh was covering clashes between the Israeli military and Palestinian gunmen, wearing a protective vest and helmet identifying her as a member of the press, when she was shot in the head. She was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, where she was pronounced dead. Another Palestinian journalist, Ali Samodi, was wounded. At least 27 journalists have been killed while working or for reasons relating to journalistic activities since the beginning of 2022, seven of those being in Ukraine and eight in Mexico, according to Reporters Without Borders.

Democratic Republic of Congo
Rebel Attack On Refugee Camp
At least 14 people including multiple children were killed in an attack on a refugee camp in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The attack, which occurred near the town of Fataki in the Djugu region of Ituri province, was confirmed by Kivu Security Tracker (KST), a monitor of violence in the region, and civil leaders who blamed the Cooperative for the Development of the Congo (CODECO). CODECO, a political-religious rebel sect claiming to represent the Lendu ethnic group, is also responsible for an earlier raid on a mining site that killed 35 people. Armed factions have clashed over land and resources in mineral-rich eastern DRC for the last decade, killing thousands and displacing millions of people. Security forces have administered the region since May of 2021 but have been unable to curb civilian massacres, and are accused of leading a repressive crackdown on political dissidents, human rights activists, and members of parliament.

Q: What Asian country is the only carbon-negative country in the world?

A: Bhutan
Landlocked between India and China, with a population of less than one million, Bhutan has promised to remain carbon neutral for all time. However, Bhutan is not only carbon neutral, but carbon negative - meaning the country’s greenhouse gas emissions are offset by its extensive forests and its exportation of renewable energy. Bhutan releases about 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, however, as a carbon sink, the small country's forests sequester far more than this. This was made possible by Bhutan prioritizing environmental sustainability and happiness above economic growth - protecting the environment became central to decision-making. Currently, Bhutan’s total land area is more than 70 percent forest cover, and has a mandate to maintain a minimum of 60 percent of the land to forest cover. The commitment to sustainability is further emphasized by the large amounts of renewable hydro energy provided to rural farmers.
