The deliberate killing of veteran journalist Shireen Abu Akla is a result of a systematic attack on Palestinian freedom of speech
The targeting of journalists Shireen abu Akla and her colleague Ali al Samdy is a result of the continuous silence over attacks and suppression of journalists over the last several years.

The Mossawa Center calls for immediate action from International organizations in defending and protecting Palestinian journalists’ rights and end the silence regarding attacks against journalists by Israel forces that include the use of rubber bullets, live ammunition, and tear gas against them.

Esteemed journalist Shireen abu Akla paid the ultimate price today for her courage in covering the truth on the ground. It should be noted that she has been repeatedly harassed and targeted since the beginning of her career in 1997.
The Mossawa Center sends its condolences to the Abu Akla family, the Palestinian people, and journalists worldwide.

There is a recurring, systematic policy of targeting Palestinian freedom of speech by the Israeli government, as Prime Minister Neftali Bennet shared his support for the actions of the Israeli military and the actions of its’ soldiers, and spoke for its “legitimacy” in its pursuit of the Palestinians in refugee camps after their displacement during Nakba.

According to reports of the Palestinian Press Agency, 48 Palestinian journalists have been martyred since 2000 while pursuing the truth.
