Repair Café - This Week!

Repair Café Five Cities supports reuse, repair, and waste prevention. Five Cities Repair Café hosts quarterly events in Arroyo Grande, CA. Bring your broken item and work with our repair volunteers to assess what it would take to repair it. You can work with our volunteers to do the repair yourself under their guidance, or have them tackle the job directly. Our church will be hosting this café on May 15th at 1:00 pm.

For more information, visit their website at: http://www.repaircafe-groverbeach-5cities.org

At spring meeting, House of Bishops speaks on Ukraine, anti-trans bills

In addition to the House of Bishops' primary activities of fellowship, study, prayer, and Sabbath, the 133 bishops and bishops-elect present held a business meeting the morning of March 19 that included the passage of pastoral statements/resolutions on the war in Ukraine and anti-trans legislation in various states.

Updates From the Vestry

In its last meeting, our Vestry decided several things that we want to bring to your attention.

Additional Fund Raising – The following was raised for our special fund raising campaigns. You may still donate directly to the organizations or through St. Barnabas
                        SLO4Home                                         $1600
                        Ukrainian refugees through ERD        $2360
                        Diocese of Jerusalem                           $271

In-person activities – Both upcoming Adult Ed series will be in-person at St. Barnabas and not online. Masks are recommended but optional for those who are vaccinated and healthy. In-person activities have a different feel to them than being online, and we want to begin making more in-person activities available to you.

Investment Committee – Our restarted Investment Committee has met twice and also met with the Finance Committee and Vestry. The Committee is exploring different investment options and after having met with the Vestry is working to balance between protecting our assets from both risk and inflation, liquidity, and ethical investing. Questions and comments may be directed to the Investment Committee members: Bob Taylor, Michele Davenport, Jim Kilponen, Brian Petersen, or Fr. Rob. The Investment Committee will meet with the Vestry again in May.

You can be a lifeline for refugee families in need. In the coming months and years, more than 65,000 Afghans will be welcomed in communities across the United States. These families have urgent and varied needs, many having left vibrant lives with only what they could carry. We are working to ensure San Luis Obispo will be a welcoming and supportive new home for the families who will arrive in the months ahead. We cannot do this without your help.

You can donate:

Our hearts are with all those living through the crisis in Ukraine. Episcopal Relief & Development is mobilizing with our partners to provide humanitarian assistance to families fleeing the violence — and we will continue to coordinate with these networks to meet the needs of families that have been displaced. Please support these efforts, and please pray for all those who are affected.

Go to www.episcopalrelief.org  to donate quickly to refugees fleeing Ukraine.  On the homepage there is a button that allows you an easy way to give money; our prayers are in pushing “donate.”

We are grateful for your support of the many for whom prayers are answered with a cup of soup, a warm coat, and a sleeping bag.

Please sign up for an open slot to host a coffee hour in the following weeks - there is a clipboard on the ushers table in the Narthex. There are openings after the 8 or 10 am service available. Contact the church office if you have questions to be answered by the Kitchen and Hospitality team.

Thank you to last week's hosts

Volunteers operate the St. Barnabas Thrift Shop.

Specifically we need people for these jobs and times:
  • Tuesday AM needs a processor
  • Wednesday PM needs a processor
  • Friday PM also needs a processor.
Regular shifts are 10-1 or 1-4. Processors do have some flexibility if those hours aren’t perfect.

There is an ongoing need for people who are willing to be trained and work as substitutes especially cashiers.

If you like being in charge there is a hope of expanding store hours but that requires managers and cashiers willing to work on Saturday once a month. Please contact Mary Ann Hjalmarson (805-481-4509) if you are interested in participating in a meaningful ministry.

The Tuesday morning Bible Study group is continuing a new unit of the Kerygma Program, “Shalom”: Old Testament scholar Donald E. Gowan unravels the multiple biblical threads of this eternal quest for peace in this masterful exploration of the Hebrew concept "shalom" and the Greek "eirene." Peacemaking is a central concern of the church and the world today. The study guide has 14 sessions but the group usually takes longer to cover the material. The material is available in a digital format or paper – printouts of the first two packets are still available in the office. Anyone is welcome to join the discussion on Zoom on Tuesday mornings at 9:30. Most participants also join for Morning Prayer at 9 AM. Please call Mary Ann Hjalmarson (805-481-4509) with questions or concerns.

The Spirituality of Aging – Has begun! In this series of classes we will look at how to "grow" old, rather than just "get" old, by exploring the wisdom of a lifetime and embracing the changes that aging brings. Age has a different task than youth, or mature adulthood. The task is to reflect on the meaning of life and to prepare for the final surrender of all we are and have been to our Creator and Guide. We move from "doing" to "being", and from "role" to "soul". Age may bring not only the challenge of losses and change but also present moment appreciation of all God has made and done in us. It can open out into the vocation of "elderhood", or sharing our gentle, patient wisdom with family, friends, and situations. We do not have less to look forward to, but more. We may miss our ability to control the outcomes of our health, life, relationships, but we are invited to a new vision of God as our faithful companion. We can learn to find God everywhere, not just in special places, rituals or times. And little by little the trust this builds in us opens into a joyous, grateful experience of the Present Moment which will become an Eternity of Love. This four week series started Tuesday, May 10th at 3:00 pm.  This class will be held in the Parish Hall/Forum Room and will not be online.

Adult Ed series on Pilgrimagechanged to June 23rd Join us for a light supper followed by learning and discussion on the topic of “Pilgrimage.” A pilgrimage is a journey, often into an unknown or foreign place, where a person goes in search of new or expanded meaning about their self, others, nature, or a higher good, through the experience. It can lead to a personal transformation, after which the pilgrim returns to their daily life. Curiously, some pilgrimages never leave home. Join us at the church starting on June 23rd at 6:30 pm for this three week series. These classes will not be online.

Flower and Candle Dedications
Candles are lighted by Susan Murray in memory of her father William Foss.

The flowers have been placed on the altar by David and Tricia Ottesen in celebration of their daughter Carole’s birthday.
