40th Forward
Issue #141- May 13, 2022

Dear Neighbors,

We went from cold to HOT HOT HOT, didn't we? I could swear we are in Summertime Chi mode, if I didn't have my calendar to reference!

I hope you and all of your loved ones are doing well and keeping cool as best as possible. Here at the 40th Ward Office, the warmer weather has provided the opportunity to be out in the ward and talking to you directly. In that spirit, my office will be organizing our first At Your Service 40th Ward Outdoor Office on May 24th from 4-7pm at Catalpa & Clark in Andersonville - come on out and say hello, bring your service requests, and let's get connected!

Over the past two days, I was also able to talk to neighbors at Amundsen High School to discuss the proposed Dog Friendly Area, and the request to implement a turf field at Winnemac Park so that we can support our student teams and keep them safe. After some robust and at times spirited discussion, I believe we will have some improvements coming to Winnemac Park, as well as an organized 4th of July event, potentially. All of this is very preliminary, but I believe that together, we can come up with solutions for our whole community! More details to come..

I also got the opportunity to attend a ribbon cutting for our newest food establishment in the 40th - Misericordia's Hearts & Flour Bakery and Cafe! Staffed by residents of Misericordia, it is a beautiful place to get a bite and get some work done - stop on by and check it out for yourself!

Finally, I wanted express my gratitude to Commander Brendan McCrudden and the 20th District of CPD for their diligent work in apprehending a suspect who was attempting to lure a 12 year old girl near Jamieson in the ward. The suspect also had tools in their vehicle that it is believed were used in car thefts and attempted break ins in the area. Just as we appreciate other public safety stakeholders, we must recognize and appreciate the role our officers play when situations like this arise in our community.

What keeps our community the safest is staying connected, and I want to thank YOU for playing your part by staying engaged! Please continue to share the updates with your neighbors, and get them to sign up for our newsletter by going to www.40thward.org.

Thank you for being the best neighbors in the City of Chicago!

Yours in Service and Solidarity,

Alder Andre Vasquez, 40th Ward

Saturday May 14 at 11:00am - Join our newest Neighbor Network Volunteer initiative at the 40th Ward office, 5620 N. Western Ave.

What's a Precinct Partner?
Precinct Partners is a program where neighbors represent each “precinct” of the ward and come together to improve our ward, one block at a time. We have been holding Saturday meetings to connect as neighbors and discuss the ways in which we would like to see our community grow. Precinct Partners support the ward through regular ward surveys and by helping to plan and execute special community projects and events.

The Precinct Partners program is also shifting some focus on to planning and implementing community projects and events. We are currently looking for event or project ideas that Precinct Partners and our office can help build. This can be anything from planning a trash cleanup day, to organizing a block club, or building a little library. If you have any ideas for community projects please let us know!

Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) announcement - With COVID-19 cases continuing to gradually increase, Cook County and the City of Chicago moved from Low into the Medium COVID-19 Community LevelWith this move, CDPH is strongly recommending masking in public indoor spaces in Chicago, including on public transit.  Chicagoans should also ensure that they and everyone in their social network is up-to-date with COVID-19 vaccines and boosters; test in the setting of any potential COVID-19 symptoms; and continue to follow all isolation and quarantine requirements.

Do you need KN95 masks for your household? Stop by the 40th Ward office to pick up free masks (5620 N. Western Ave) during office hours. We also have a small number of child-sized N95 and KN95 masks available while supplies last.

The IL Dept. of Public Health is recommending a second booster dose for certain individuals at least four months after the first booster dose. This applies to adults over 50 years of age, and to immunocompromised individuals over 12 years old. The CDC also recommended a second booster dose with an mRNA vaccine for all those who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine for both their primary dose and their first booster, four months after their first booster dose. Those who already received an mRNA booster dose after their initial Johnson and Johnson primary vaccine do not need an additional booster unless they are either over the age of 50 years or immunocompromised.

The state also announced that providers who administer COVID-19 vaccines to uninsured individuals can bill the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services’ (HFS) COVID-19 Uninsured Program for vaccine administration. More information on the HFS program, which also covers COVID-19 testing, is available here.

On Hepatitis Testing Day, May 19th, 2022, the Indo-American Center will host a Hepatitis B Screening event. Anyone above the age of 18 is welcome to attend this event; we are accepting walk-ins. Individuals can also register here.

The City of Chicago has launched a free and voluntary camera registration program open to anyone who lives or operates a business in Chicago. Individuals who have a private security camera that captures the public way can register its location with the Chicago Police Department to help solve crime faster.

Signing up for the City's camera program holds a number of benefits, including:

  • strengthening communication between residents and detectives
  • streamlining data and evidence collection in the event of a crime
  • identifying suspects when there are no witnesses

When you register the location of your camera, you simply allow the Chicago Police Department to contact you if a crime occurs on your block.

  • CPD will not have direct access to your camera system.
  • CPD cannot access camera footage without your consent.
  • There is no requirement to provide footage to CPD at any time.

To ensure that Chicagoans have access to the tools needed to protect their property, the City of Chicago will soon launch a Home and Business Protection Rebate program that will provide rebates up to certain limits that cover the costs of outdoor security cameras, one year of cloud storage for video footage, outdoor motion sensor lighting, and vehicle GPS trackers. Additional details on eligibility and reimbursement will become available when the program launches. To learn more and register the location of any existing cameras, please visit chicagopolice.org/cameraregistration.
