Arise and See
Once upon a time, a man was having a conversation with God. The man first asked God about time in Heaven. God answered, "A second for me is like a million years for you." He then asked God, "what is money like in Heaven?" To which God replied, "A penny in Heaven is like one million dollars to you." The man asked for one of these Heavenly pennies. God said, "Sure! In a second."
Okay, so why the silly story? Well, the man asked God about things that are important here on Earth: time and money. But what if we flipped the script? That would mean rather than a Heavenly penny equaling a million dollars, a million dollars is only a penny. The man was focused on things that were important now. Things that could help on Earth. He didn't think to ask God about what things are valuable there in Heaven. The man had an earthly perspective. But Jesus invites us into a new perspective.
As believers in Christ, we are invited, and challenged, to view things with a Heavenly mindset.
"Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things." (Col 3:1-2)
Paul is writing to a church that is feeling the pressures of culture all around them. In Colossae, Christians were being torn between the polytheistic society and the Judaic society. They were pressured to either accept Jesus as one of the gods alongside Apollo or Hermes or Athena, or to observe all the laws laid out in the Torah, such as a kosher diet or circumcision. But Jesus seeks us to have a higher thinking and standard.
