Program Updates

A Series of Vaccination Information Articles - ARTICLE #2: Vaccines protect our families

Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities in Minnesota face increased health challenges from COVID-19. Asians make up 5% of the Minnesota population but 8% of critical COVID hospital cases.  As of April 2022, over 63,900 Asians have gotten COVID in Minnesota alone, and over 470 died from it, according to the Minnesota Department of Health.

We often talk about an Asian American Pacific Islander community, but there are many different communities with Asian and Pacific Islander heritage in Minnesota. The Coalition of Asian American Leaders reports that COVID was the top cause of death for Hmong, Karen, and Karenni Minnesotans in 2020.  29% of Hmong, Karen, and Karenni deaths in Minnesota were from COVID compared to 11% of deaths among white Minnesotans. Overall, half of Asian Minnesotans who died from COVID were Hmong. This suggests that public health programs are not effectively supporting and reaching diverse AAPI communities.

May 2022 Youth Discussion

May is both Mental Awareness month and Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) month. To help prepare to recognize and support the community, Asian Media Access invited John Yang to train youth on Mental wellness through mental fitness, balance, meditation, mindfulness, and empowerment.

Every single person has mental health. It is a factor in our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It is important to understand how to constructively manage our mental health as it determines how we make choices in our life. Depending on our life stages and situations, these impacts on our mental health can affect how we think, feel, and act. This includes our daily behaviors, such as sleeping, eating, thinking, working, and interacting with people. To help combat the inevitable challenges, John Yang recommends supporting mental health through practicing mental fitness, balance, meditation, mindfulness, and empowerment.

Bystander Intervention to stop anti-Asian/American and xenophobic harassment

DATE/TIME: Monday, June 6, 12:30PM CST: Register here
DATE/TIMEThursday, June 16, 5:00PM CST: Register here

Anti-Asian/American and xenophobic harassment are on the rise across the US -- and the world. In this virtual Zoom workshop sponsored by Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago, CAIR Chicago, and Hollaback!, you'll learn how you can intervene effectively as a bystander without compromising your safety.

This 60-90 minute, interactive training will teach you Hollaback!'s 5D's of bystander intervention methodology. We'll start by talking about the types of discrimination that Asian and Asian American folks are facing right now - from microaggressions to violence. You'll then learn what to look for and the positive impact that bystander intervention has on individuals and communities.

We'll talk through five strategies for intervention: distract, delegate, document, delay, and direct; and how to prioritize your own safety while intervening. At the end of our practice scenarios, and you'll leave feeling more confident intervening the next time you see Anti-Asian/American harassment.

After a two-year wait, Jungle Theater and Theater Mu are thrilled to finally invite you to the regional premiere of Lauren Yee's Cambodian Rock Band, running this summer from Jun 8-Jul 31.

"At its heart, Cambodian Rock Band is a story of intergenerational war trauma and how an immigrant's survival through genocide impacts his daughter's American journey," says Mu Artistic Director Lily Tung Crystal, who directs the production.

"Yet, while it mourns a region's immense loss, it also celebrates the survival and resilience of the human spirit. Through its specificity of the Cambodian experience, Cambodian Rock Band touches upon the universality of our community's stories. Yee magically weaves together both tragedy and joy, music and words, to create a transcendent Asian American theatrical experience."

A conversation with author Mai Neng Vang about her new book

“Dejsiab: From My Liver to Yours” is a one of a kind poetry book that explores colonialism, patriarchy, hope, and healing through a critical Hmong womxn’s lens. Author Mai Neng Vang will share her poems and process.

“Through the years, I’ve come to realize that healing is not a linear process – there are no definitive steps to take before one can say they have healed from their traumas. More than this, healing looks different for everyone, but regardless of how we heal or how long it takes us to heal, healing is so necessary for us to reconcile with the generations of trauma and hurt that our ancestors, mothers, sisters, aunties have endured…The poems found in this book are a series of love letters: love letters to who I was, from who I am, for who I will become. As a reader, you bear witness to the struggles, the joys, and the thoughts that I have as someone who is constantly becoming. In this way, we, too, are having a heart-to-heart throughout this book. I hope that you find relevance and solace in my words and are able to draw strength and dejsiab from these pages.” – Mai Neng Vang.

PLACECamp Courage, Maple Lake MN (buses will be provided, however all participants will have a central meet location), Register by May 25: bit.ly/boba-retreat

Rooted in Resilience is a summer retreat created by and for Asian MN high school youth. As young people, we often don’t have the opportunity to talk about the issues that are impacting us in schools. Even in the face of anti-Asian violence, police brutality, and anti-LGBTQ hatred - we are expected to stay silent about our humanity. We want to change this. We invite you to join us for our leadership and social justice retreat for Asian Minnesotan high school youth.

During this retreat, we will bring Asian Minnesotan youth together to redefine and explore our leadership, power, and history of resilience. Asians are often depicted as the model minority but we know that there are endless possibilities of who we are. We are fierce, we are loving, we are infinite, and we are rooted in resilience.

This is a space for Asian Minnesotan youth to feel safe and powerful in their own skin. Let’s be in community with each other and build collective power!

In this installment of C.A.F.E. 229, we are honored to welcome the Turner Twins, modern British expeditionists, who after a tragic accident threatened one of their lives, found a renewed passion and sense of curiosity for the world. They’ll reflect on over a decade of traveling, exploration, and immersion in new lifestyles and cultures.

DATE/TIME:  Tuesday, June 28, 2022, 12:00pm-1:30pm
PLACE: Online, register https://stratishealth-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_XBEnNWBCQmWnT66myzd2VQ

About 1 in 10 Minnesotan households struggle with food insecurity. Black, Latinx, Native Americans, people with disabilities, and people living in rural and lower-income counties suffer the greatest disparities in access to quality nutrition. They are more likely to suffer diet-related chronic diseases, including heart disease, certain cancers, stroke, and diabetes.

The idea of food as medicine is rapidly gaining momentum. Food and nutrition interventions such as food pharmacies, produce prescriptions, and medically-tailored meals can help prevent and manage diet-related chronic diseases. Join us to learn more about integrating nutrition into clinical care systems to improve health.

Presenting is Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, a respected leader in nutrition and research who serves as dean at the Tufts Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy and teaches at Tufts School of Medicine.
