               The Big Meetup

         Report from last Big Meetup

Debriefing from XR April Rebellion in London,
                                         Vire Island, 25th April

The event was very well attended with a great celebratory atmosphere with lovely cakes and decorations that Marcea put around us.
We asked those attending to consider their experiences in London with the structure of Roses, Buds and Thorns.
This approach enabled us to consider the rose: the delightful parts; buds: those aspects that helped us with reflections, learning and growth; and thorns: what didn't work so well and could be improved in the future.

ROSES: lovely comments such as: "good energy and spontaneity of actions". Many people valued the role that the Samba band played in uplifting spirits while creating a lovely presence in London.
Participants greatly appreciated the roles played by the Ground Elders and Grandparents in the special actions created by them.
They also appreciated the good organisation and focused targeting of actions, especially towards big businesses and funders of fossil fuels.
Outreach days were a source of learning and joy for many of those present, especially door knocking. It was seen as particularly helpful for Totnes XR as we haven't developed our experience and skills adequately yet.
The presentations of personal experiences reflected, for some of us, how much more diverse XR is than we had thought all along.
Many appreciated the vocal presence of XR Youth and felt that XR doctors, nurses and health workers greatly enhance our credibility and weight of social and political influence.

BUDS: it was felt that XR needed to be more mindful about the way our actions impact on the public.
Some mentioned that the shock of returning home following a great Rebellion can impact on participants, especially newcomers, and that support needs to be offered to anyone needing it.
Those present expressed their appreciation of Hackney's use of surveys as part of their door knocking, emphasising that it was a very effective means of encouraging conversation. Many thought it might be worth adopting by Totnes door knocking group, expressing how eager they were to start this in Totnes as soon as possible.
Others asserted that disruptive actions needed to be accompanied by good, clearly expressed narrative. Why are we doing this? We need to be more creative, think out of the box so we can catch the public and media attention.
Finally it was suggested that we forged links with other groups in Devon and Cornwall to create mutual support structures.

THORNS: walking a lot presented a great challenge for some of those taking part in the Rebellion in London.
Many expressed their disapproval of the blocking of bridges in London. Particularly as it was noted that it impacted badly on doctors and nurses coming off shifts.
The very small coverage of the Rebellion in the British media was a source of great discontent. What is it that we need to do to encourage the public and the media to face up to and act against the disasters of climate emergency we are already facing? How do we break through these great barriers?

                       Next Big Meetup

           Tuesday 31st May 2022, 6.00 - 7.30pm
                                                (note change of time!)

We’re gathering outside at The Glade
for the next Big Meetup.

Directions here: https://facebook.us20.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a7729e336fd895447dd21c48b&id=05609c80f3&e=8c576fc30e

Come along to catch up with old friends and make new ones too   - bring cake, a drink and wood/kindling to make a fire.
The next Rebellion, starting 10th September 2022, will be here before we know it - book time off work now!
We’re making a big push with outreach so there’ll be a workshop to help us all to have difficult conversations with friends, relatives, on the street and on people’s doorsteps.  This is for everyone, even if outreach isn't your thing.
If you’re new to our local group and would like to chat to someone on the phone or on zoom before coming to a Big Meetup, contact Helen at taawelcoming@protonmail.com
Big Meetup dates
We’re proposing a meeting in July - the 12th - and then perhaps more frequent as we get closer to the Rebellion. We’ll take a temperature check on this at the next BMU.  If you won’t be there and want to input, please contact the hosting team.
And remember - these are your meetings and we welcome all suggestions. Let us know -  taahosting@protonmail.com

XR membership is huge and growing and it can be a bit daunting, so the Rebellion Academy is a series of short on-line tutorials covering everything from "The 10 Principles" to how to write press releases and loads more!
https://uk.rebellion.academy/ .
It's a good place to start, with some basic orientation, and it can help you decide what sort of rebel you are and what sort of role would suit you.

Thank you for taking action to fight climate and ecological breakdown - we are all crew and feedback is always welcome - hope to see you on the streets soon
