Seeking Submissions: HEDWIG FAN ART CONTEST

Cardinal Stage is producing the iconic rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch in June and we want to put your art in the show! We are looking for local, queer, Hedwig fans who are artists to get involved with the production. We are seeking submissions of illustrations inspired by the song “Origin of Love”.

Our team will select an artist whose illustrations will be animated by our projection designer and used in our production. The selected artist will receive 2 VIP tickets ($90 value) and 4 additional tickets ($100 value) to be used for any performance.

By Hand Gallery presents: May Exhibit: 3AM

Iron and Mixed Media Sculpture by Bert Gilbert

Exhibit Dates: May 6th–26th, 2022

For the past decade, Gilbert has built his work on the cast iron elements he produces during his intensive, annual Artist Residency at the iron casting Sculpture Trails of Solsberry, Indiana. Using recycled iron for casting, scrap and reclaimed steel on welded pieces, and repurposed, salvaged building materials in his mixed media works, Gilbert strives to understand the inherent language in the history of the recycled items.

The artist not only forms the models and creates the molds, but he also actively participates in the team pour-casting process which seminally grounds him in the works’ creation. He states: “In my recent pieces, I have been casting more and more [plastic] packing materials. This detritus of our online consumer culture, with its soft corpulent forms, seems an apt metaphor for the empty opulence of consumerism and surely a bellwether for future archaeologists defining our culture.”

The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Cicada cinema presents: Rock 'N' Roll High School
Thursday, May 19th, 7:30PM & 10 PM

At the Orbit Room
$5 dollars

Synopsis: Teen punkette Riff Randall (P.J. Soles of CARRIE and HALLOWEEN) has one abiding fantasy: to meet the dreamy Ramones, and get them to perform one of her songs. Standing in her way is Principal Togar (Warhol star Mary Woronov), who runs Vince Lombardi High like a despot — until the boys from Forest Hills lead a student body putsch and rock the school down to its foundations. A tribute to the after-school bedroom sexual awakening, when one daydreams of Joey joining you in the shower.

Director Allan Arkush channels Frank Tashlin and the smartass spirit of Mad Magazine throughout the film, transforming his love letter to rock ’n’ roll and the eternal allure of being a teenager at war with parents into a live-action cartoon filled with giddily surreal touches. In reality, Ramones fandom was a small, specific, eccentric niche. But in Rock ’N’ Roll High School, the Ramones are as big as The Beatles.

May 21
WonderLab AfterHours: Science of Catastrophe
May 21st, from 7-9pm

Join us as we explore the catastrophic science of Kurt Vonnegut Jr.'s end-of-the-world novel Galápagos in this special 21+ event at the WonderLab.

Come enjoy beer from Upland, including a special Granfalloon brew, while trying out hands-on, Vonnegut-themed activities that imagine what the world and the beings who live on it could be like a million years from now.

Learn about what the Earth was like in the Pleistocene Epoch and what it could look like far in the future, explore how island species like the ones on the Galápagos islands evolve, and imagine how your own new organisms might adapt to changing environments. Try out a game that lets you experience what it takes to protect people from natural disasters, learn to identify hints of our evolutionary past in the human skeleton, and hear about the species of the Galápagos from the WonderLab's own marine biologist! Speakers will present on an array of thought-provoking topics, including the meaning of evolution in Vonnegut's work, the human relationship with the natural world, how plants would react in a world without human intervention, and what human activities like dancing and eating could look like a million years in the future. Snacks and refreshments from One World Catering will also be provided.
