MONTHLY ROUND-UP MAY 2022

INTRODUCTION
It is a rare church that can call on the devoted ministry of one of its members for well over 60 years.  Peter Brand, who died on 15th April, moved to Edinburgh in the 1950s and from then on gave a lifetime of service to St John’s, and the record of his loyalty is unlikely ever to be matched.   As a distinguished Palaeontologist, he was never going to have a full-time ministry in the church.  But as Lay Reader, and, when it became possible, ordained Non-Stipendiary member of the Ministry Team, he became a wonderful thread of continuity for the church as clergy came and went.  Everything was done with meticulous care and attention to detail.  There will be a proper tribute in the Magazine, but meanwhile he was given a stirring farewell at his funeral in the church on 2nd May. Tributes were paid to him as Geologist, Minister, Philatelist and Human Being, and as he had been Chaplain to the Choir the Choir turned out in force.   Former Choirmasters and others came to reinforce the singing, and the Choir rose to new heights in a magnificent choral tribute, climaxing in an overpowering rendering of Parry’s I Was Glad when they Said unto me.  A fitting send-off to a great servant of St John’s.

A RETURN TO NEAR NORMALITY IN CHURCH
Masks are perfectly acceptable if anyone joining in a service feels more comfortable wearing one but they are no longer required to be worn by law.

Coffee and socialising takes place after the services sometimes in the hall with its views of the castle, Princes Street Gardens and our neighbouring church, St Cuthbert’s and sometimes in the north aisle of the church.

 WELCOME  to baby Eilidh Jane, a daughter for Kate and Russell Laughland and sister for Logan and Olivia.
RIP Peter Brand, Judith Brown and Bob Grey
Please continue to pray for them and their families.

Voluntary
Opening Sentence
Alleluia! Christ is risen. The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia!

Hymn Charles Wesley (1707–1788), A&M(2013) #827
Ye servants of God, your Master proclaim,
and publish abroad his wonderful name;
the name all-victorious of Jesus extol:
his kingdom is glorious, and rules over all.

God ruleth on high, almighty to save;
and still he is nigh, his presence we have;
the great congregation his triumph shall sing,
ascribing salvation to Jesus our King.

Salvation to God who sits on the throne!
Let all cry aloud, and honour the Son.
The praises of Jesus the angels proclaim,
fall down on their faces, and worship the Lamb.

Then let us adore, and give him his right:
all glory and power, all wisdom and might,
and honour and blessing, with angels above,
and thanks never-ceasing, and infinite love.

Welcome
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. (2 Corinthians 13:14) And also with you.
The presider welcomes the people.

Collect for Purity
Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gloria
Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father,
with God the Son, Jesus Christ, and God the Holy Spirit.

We worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us;

You are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer,
For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord,
You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father.  Amen.

Collects of the Day
Almighty God, your Son Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. Give us grace to love one another and walk in the way of his commandments, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
O God, it is your will to hold both heaven and earth in a single peace. Let the design of your great love shine on the waste of our wraths and sorrows, of our violence and rebellion, and give peace to your Church, peace among nations, peace in our homes, and peace in our hearts; through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

First Reading Revelation 21:1-6, read by Peter Hunter
A reading from Revelation:
I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,
"See, the home of God is among mortals.
He will dwell with them as their God;
they will be his peoples,
and God himself will be with them;
he will wipe every tear from their eyes.
Death will be no more;
mourning and crying and pain will be no more,
for the first things have passed away."
And the one who was seated on the throne said, "See, I am making all things new." Also he said, "Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true." Then he said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life."
Hear, what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 148 Anglican Chant
1 Hallelujah! Praise the  Lord from the heavens; * praise him in the heights.
2 Praise him, all you angels of his; * praise him, all his host.
3 Praise him, sun and moon; * praise him, all you shining stars.
4 Praise him, heaven of heavens, * and you waters above the heavens.
5 Let them praise the Name of the  Lord; *
for he commanded, and they were created.
6 He made them stand fast for ever and ever; *
he gave them a law which shall not pass away.

7 Praise the  Lord from the earth, * you sea-monsters and all deeps;
8 Fire and hail, snow and fog, * tempestuous wind, doing his will;
9 Mountains and all hills, * fruit trees and all cedars;
10 Wild beasts and all cattle, * creeping things and winged birds;
11 Kings of the earth and all peoples, * princes and all rulers of the world;
12 Young men and maidens, * old and young together.
13 Let them praise the Name of the  Lord, *
for his Name only is exalted, his splendour is over earth and heaven.

14 He has raised up strength for his people and praise for all his loyal servants, *
the children of Israel, a people who are near him. Hallelujah!

Second Reading John 13:31-35, read by Eden Anderson
Celtic Alleluia Fintan O’Carrol (+1981), Christopher Walker (*1947), A&M(2013) #196 Refrain
Alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia. (2x)
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.
Glory to Christ our Saviour.
At the last supper, when Judas had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, 'Where I am going, you cannot come.' I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."
Give thanks to the Lord for his glorious Gospel. Praise to Christ our Lord.
Celtic Alleluia A&M(2013) #196 Refrain

Sermon
Anthem Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943), sung by the choir
Богородице Дево, радуйся, благодатная Марие, Господь с тобою. Благословена ты в женах, и благословен плод чрева твоего, яко Спаса родила еси душ наших.
Rejoice, virgin mother of God, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, for you have borne the Saviour of our souls.
Creed
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Intercession led by Robert Philp
Intercessions are offered for the church, the world, creation, those in need, and the departed.
Confession and Absolution

God is love and we are God’s children. There is no room for fear in love.
We love because God loved us first. Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith.
Lord God, our true mother and father: you gave us life and breath. And yet, we embrace a culture of death. Kyrie eleison. Lord, have mercy.
Lord God, born of our sister Mary: you love us in life, unto death, beyond death, and into life everlasting. And yet, we shy away from life eternal and reject life abundant. Christe eleison. Christ, have mercy.
Lord God, life-giving and death-conquering Spirit: you move among us to bring about your loving purposes for all of creation. And yet, we destroy, oppress, and bring about death in body, mind, and soul. Kyrie eleison. Lord, have mercy.
God, who is both power and love, forgive us and free us from our sins, heal and strengthen us by his Spirit, and raise us to new life in Christ our Lord. Amen.

Peace
Please stand as you are able
Alleluia! We meet in Christ's name. Let us share his peace. Alleluia!

Hymn George Ratcliffe Woodward (+1934), Tobias Clausnitzer (+1684), A&M(2013) #439
Dearest Jesu, we are here, at thy call, thy presence owning;
pleading now in holy fear that great sacrifice atoning:
Word incarnate, much in wonder on this mystery deep we ponder.

Jesu, strong to save — the same yesterday, today, for ever —
make us fear and love thy name, serving thee with best endeavour:
in this life, O ne’er forsake us, but to bliss hereafter take us.

Prayers over the gifts
Gracious God, you show us your way and give us your divine life. May everything we do be directed by the knowledge of your truth. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the risen Lord. Amen.

Eucharistic Prayer
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise.
Worship and praise belong to you, Author of all being. Your power sustains, your love restores, our broken world. You are unceasingly at work, from chaos bringing order and filling emptiness with life.
Christ, raised from the dead, proclaims the dawn of hope. He lives in us that we may walk in light.
Your Spirit is fire in us, your breath is power to purge our sin and warm our hearts to love.
As children of your redeeming purpose, freed by him who burst from the tomb and opened the gate of life, we offer you our praise, with angels and archangels and the whole company of heaven, singing the hymn of your unending glory:
Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.         Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest
Praise and thanksgiving be to you, Lord of all, for by the Cross eternal life is ours
and death is swallowed up in victory. In the first light of Easter glory broke from the tomb and changed the women's sorrow into joy. From the Garden the mystery dawned that he whom they had loved and lost is with us now in every place for ever.
Making himself known in the breaking of the bread, speaking peace to the fearful disciples, welcoming weary fishermen on the shore, he renewed the promise of his presence and of new birth in the Spirit who sets the seal of freedom on your sons and daughters.
Before he was given up to suffering and death, recalling the night of Israel's release, the night in which slaves walked free, at supper with his disciples he took bread and offered you thanks. He broke the bread, and gave it to them, saying:
"Take, eat. This is my Body: it is broken for you."
After supper, he took the cup, he offered you thanks, and gave it to them saying:
"Drink this, all of you. This is my Blood of the new covenant; it is poured out for you, and for all, that sins may be forgiven. Do this in remembrance of me."
We now obey your Son's command. We recall his blessed passion and death, his glorious resurrection and ascension; and we look for the coming of his Kingdom. Made one with him, we offer you these gifts and with them ourselves, a single, holy, living sacrifice.
Hear us, most merciful Father, and send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon this bread and this wine, that, overshadowed by the Spirit’s life-giving power, they may be the Body and Blood of your Son, and we may be kindled with the fire of your love and renewed for the service of your Kingdom.
Help us, who are baptised into the fellowship of Christ's  Body to live and work to your praise and glory; may we grow together in unity and love until at last, in your new creation, we enter into our heritage in the company of the Virgin Mary, the apostles, and prophets, and of all our brothers and sisters living and departed.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be to you, Lord of all ages, world without end. AMEN.

Breaking of the Bread
The living bread is broken for the life of the world. Lord, unite us in this sign.

Lord’s Prayer
As our Saviour Christ has commanded and taught us, we are bold to say:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Fraction (spoken)

Jesus, Lamb of God: have mercy on us.
Jesus, bearer of our sins: have mercy on us.
Jesus, redeemer of the world: Give us your peace.

Invitation & Communion
At the moment, we still do not share the common cup. However, a small drop of wine was applied to each wafer before the service. It ensures that you will received the Sacrament in both kinds. If you need a gluten-free wafer, please let us know.

Communion Motet Robert Parsons (1530-1571/2), sung by the choir
Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum. Benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Amen.

Post-Communion
Please stand, as you are able
Give thanks to our gracious God: whose mercy endures for ever.
God of love, in this eucharist we have heard your truth and shared in your life. May we always walk in your way, in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord.
Amen.

Blessing The priest blesses the people

Hymn Fanny Crosby, (Frances Jane van Alstyne) (1820–1915), A&M(2013) #818

To God be the glory, great things he has done!
So loved he the world that he gave us his Son,
who yielded his life an atonement for sin
and opened the life-gate that all may go in.

Refrain  Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Let the earth hear his voice!
Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,
and give him the glory! Great things he has done!

O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood!
To every believer the promise of God!
The vilest offender who truly believes,
that moment from Jesus forgiveness receives. Refrain

Great things he has taught us, great things he has done,
and great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
but purer and higher and greater will be
our wonder, our rapture, when Jesus we see. Refrain

Dismissal

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Alleluia! In the name of Christ, Alleluia!
