CPCC members are invited to attend the Children’s Palliative Care Coalition Member Update and Annual Meeting on Thursday, June 2 at 4:00 PM. The Annual Meeting will be a 60-minute virtual meeting conducted on Zoom.  Coalition leadership will provide a recap of activities and initiatives over the past year and share our plans for the future, including the fall 2022 conference.   In addition to the update, per our bylaw requirements, we will hold elections for our board of directors and officers.  
 

Fulfilling our mission of providing resources for medical professionals, volunteers and families caring for children with life-limiting illnesses, and ensuring the availability of compassionate, comprehensive care across the State of Michigan is dependent on a dedicated group of volunteers. If you are interested in taking on a more active volunteer role in our coalition such as joining the board or serving on one of the committees, please email our President, Ken Pituch, MD, at kpituch@med.umich.edu by May 23. He would welcome the opportunity to share more about the roles, time commitments and discuss your interest.  We need to finalize the board and officer slate and share with members prior to the June 2, meeting.

The Perinatal Palliative Care Birth Plan as
an Advance Care Planning Tool - Webinar
Tuesday, May 17 - 3:00 pm

This webinar will highlight the perinatal palliative care birth plan and how it acts as an advance care planning tool for families facing complicated pregnancies and one which has both therapeutic and functional roles in communication and family empowerment. 

Families facing life-limiting or complex fetal diagnoses face the challenge of navigating goals of care for a baby that they have yet to meet. With the support of perinatal palliative care teams, parents can create a space for grief, advocate for value-driven care, and honor the life of the child during ongoing pregnancy and into the newborn period. The perinatal palliative care birth plan acts as an advance care planning tool for families facing complicated pregnancies and one which has both therapeutic and functional roles in communication and family empowerment.

Presenter: Amy Brown Schlegel, MD, Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and The Ohio State University College of Medicine. She practices Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine within the Division of Neonatology, providing patient care to critically ill and complex neonates at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, The Ohio State University Medical Center, and The Fetal Center at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

PPCC (Pediatric Palliative Care Coalition), GIPPCC (Greater Illinois Pediatric Palliative Care Coalition), CHPCC (Children’s Hospice & Palliative Care Coalition of California), and the CSU Shiley Haynes Institute for Palliative Care have collaborated to offer the PPC Webinar Series to raise the visibility of pediatric palliative care and to build clinicians’ competencies and confidence. 
North Star Reach Camp is Back Open!

After two years of the pandemic and suspended in-person camp programming, North Star Camp has reopened!

Children with serious health challenges and their families were especially impacted during the pandemic.. The safeguards that were meant to keep everyone safe have also left these children and families feeling isolated, alone, and even outcast. While we are now seeing the world making strides toward a post-pandemic society, those same families remain cautious about returning to the routines everyone else has been anxiously waiting for.
 
Camp is a place of community, connection, and inclusiveness. A place where families know that their child’s safety is first and foremost. A place where kids with serious health challenges can just be kids. This is a truly welcome change from their recent experiences. But you already knew that because you have been an important part of spreading the word and connecting kids and families to North Star Reach.
