KSS Respiratory Quality Improvement Award winners
Our Respiratory Programme held its spring Respiratory Collaborative on 10th May. The virtual event was co-chaired by clinical leads Julia Bott and Dr Jo Congleton, with a great line up of presentations as well as the annual KSS Respiratory Quality Improvement Awards.
Congratulations to this year’s winners, the Frimley Health Community Respiratory teams (Adult Integrated Respiratory team (AIR), FHFT North and FHFT Community Respiratory Team, FHFT South) for their Post COVID Classes, providing specialist input, ‘COVID safe’ face to face rehabilitation and promotion of self-management to support ongoing recovery from COVID 19 for patients following admission.

AHSN Network launches innovation awards with NHS Confederation
New national awards to celebrate innovation in health and care have been launched by the AHSN Network, working in collaboration with NHS Confederation. The Innovate Awards are focused on celebrating excellence in innovation and transformation across the health and care system. There are 10 award categories as well as a 'winner of winners' award.
Anyone working in integrated care communities, including local authorities, care providers and other NHS health and care services, can enter. These awards represent a golden opportunity to tell the story of those who have collaborated and developed new initiatives against the backdrop of the pandemic.
The 10 award categories open for entry this year are:
• Net Zero Innovation of the Year
• The Diversity in Innovation Award
• Excellence in Patient and Public Involvement in Transformation and Innovation
• Innovation Spread Award
• Best Workforce Innovation
• Innovation Helping Address Health Inequalities
• Outstanding Contribution to Population Health Through Innovation
• Innovative Health System of the Year
• Outstanding Collaboration with Industry
• Enabling Safer Systems of Care Through Innovation.
The final award – Innovation Champion of the Year – will be selected by the judges from across the other category winners.
The closing date for submissions is midnight on 23 June and winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on 29 September 2022.

Collaborative approach to CVD
More than 400 people registered for last week’s South-East Lipids Management webinar, which was the first in a series of cardiovascular disease (CVD) education events run by Kent Surrey and Sussex, Wessex and Oxford AHSNs.
Jen Bayly, Principal Consultant, CVD Prevention, KSS AHSN, helped to organise the session and in this blog she reflects on the importance of the work and the next steps in the programme.

SBRI cancer programme open to applications
Applications are now open for the SBRI cancer programme competition 2, which launched on 5 April. The competition is delivered in partnership with NHS England and NHS Improvement’s cancer programme.
This £15million competition invites applications for funding to implement solutions in late-stage development into front-line settings to improve early detection and diagnosis of cancer.
The deadline for applications is 24 May 2022.

AHSN Network at Health Plus Care conference
Speakers from across the AHSN Network will feature at the Health Plus Care conference at ExCel in London on 18 and19 May 2022. Returning as a face-to-face event after a three year absence, the conference aims to provide opportunities for the NHS to come together to reflect, respond and reorganise following the challenges of the past two years.
The event will feature a variety of talks and sessions across three programmes:
• The Healthcare Show
• The Residential & Care Home Show
• Digital Healthcare Show
It's a chance to hear speakers from across the AHSN Network on both days, covering a variety of topics including transformation, integrated care, digital healthcare and building a net zero NHS.
The event is free for UK care, healthcare and allied healthcare professionals.

Supporting patient engagement with digital health
Health apps and digital tools have the potential to help alleviate some of the huge pressures the NHS faces from Covid-19, the backlog of care and rising demand. But introducing these tools into health care and supporting people to use them is never a quick fix, and they will not work for everyone.
This summary from the Nuffield Trust provides a set of lessons for ensuring digital health innovations are applied in optimal ways for the people using them. The findings are based on a large-scale evaluation of digital technologies being implemented in health and social care in East London.

Integration and innovation
NHS Confederation has launched a new report that looks at how collaborations between providers at neighbourhood, place and system level are making a positive impact on patient care.
The report is the latest in its Integration and Innovation in Action series, and explores examples of provider collaboration at neighbourhood, place and system level. Based on interviews with leaders and clinicians, it also identifies a common set of principles that underpin partnership working – whatever the size or challenge.

NICE Lipid Management Pathway
The clinical pathway for lipid management has now been updated to include bempedoic acid to primary prevention and Inclisiran into the secondary prevention pathway. This pathway unifies multiple NICE guidance and technology appraisals into a single document to support clinical decision making on lipid management, supporting the NHS Long Term Plan’s ambitions for cardiovascular disease prevention and to improve patient outcomes.

Innovator support day - videos published
Our Innovator Support Day was a pilot that brought together a small number of companies that we’ve been supporting to share experiences and knowledge, with a particular focus on addressing health inequalities.

Mental health competition
The NIHR Trauma MIC is running a competition as part of its new Mental Health (PTSD) workstream. The competition invites applications for medical devices/ technologies addressing the prevention and/ or management of the psychological impact of traumatic physical injury.
Any medical device-based solution for any psychological impact of traumatic physical injury will be considered. Up to three projects will be awarded in-kind support to the value of £15,000. Applications are encouraged from SME’s and individuals working for either HEIs or NHS Trusts.

Health Technology Regulatory and Innovation Programme Application Guide
If you are an SME working in HealthTech, you can apply for up to £30,000 of funding for use with regulatory affairs providers, to help you navigate regulatory pathways.
On behalf of Innovate UK, CPI and ABHI have developed the Health Technology Regulatory and Innovation Programme to support small and medium-sized (SME) businesses to navigate the complex and ever-changing HealthTech regulatory landscape.
The programme will support SMEs that rely on external expertise to commercialise new products, or re-register existing products in-line with new regulatory requirements.

Polypharmacy: Getting the balance right

Following the success of the previous two polypharmacy events, a further webinar has been organised to demonstrate how polypharmacy prescribing comparators help us understand variation in prescribing of multiple medicines and identify patients more likely to be exposed to the risk of taking multiple, or combinations of, medicines. Hosted by the AHSN Network and NHS Business Services Authority (BSA), the webinar will take place on Tuesday 24 May for nominated AHSN polypharmacy and clinical leads; ICS medicines optimisation leads and Primary Care Network (PCN) teams, including GPs and pharmacists.

PPE innovation forum

A series of events across England for front-line health and care staff to share their views and experience to inform the development of the next generation of PPE.
