Siefken Joins Office of Technology Transitions at the DOE
Scott Institute’s Anna J. Siefken will take a leave of absence from her position as Executive Director to join the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Technology Transitions (OTT) as a Commercialization Executive. The OTT serves as the central hub for the technology transfer activities across the DOE’s extensive R&D enterprise. Learn more about Anna’s special assignment here.

Scott Institute Joins Energy Leaders for Hydrogen Summit
Scott Institute Director Jay Whitacre and Faculty Affiliates Valerie Karplus and Shawn Litster present to top-level executives and academics from around the region at the inaugural H2 Summit: Fueling the Future. The event brought together key stakeholders to stimulate discussion and action towards securing a hydrogen hub for the Western Pennsylvania region. Learn more about the summit
CMU Students Win Second Place in DOE Solar District Cup Division
CMU's inaugural Solar District cup team won second place in the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory division of the DOE Solar District Cup Challenge. Students Alexandra Kramer (EST&P), Keitaro Iwasa (Tepper), Sean Irvine (Tepper), and Ian Gray (Tepper) were guided by faculty mentor Panos Moutis (Scott Institute). More about the team project here.
CMU Alumnus DeCarolis named Administrator of the U.S. Energy Information Administration
Dr. Joseph DeCarolis (CMU PhD in Engineering and Public Policy ‘04) was confirmed Administrator of the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). He will oversee a wide range of statistical, analytical, and dissemination activities and will serve as a primary spokesperson for the agency. Read more.

Energy Fellow Paulina Jaramillio discusses transportation and vehicle electrification in the newly released IPCC report for climate-policymakers.

UEIC Leadership Summit Looks Towards the Future
The Scott Institute co-hosted the 2022 University Energy Institute Collaborative (UEIC) Leadership Summit April 26-27, in collaboration with the Colorado School of Mines' Payne Institute for Public Policy. The leaders in attendance reviewed accomplishments of the UEIC such as the publishing of “Current status of university-based energy institutes in the United States and a pathway to forming a national organization” in iScience in April. More about the summit here.
Gecko Robotics Continues Growth with New Office
CMU spinout Gecko Robotics, a Pittsburgh-based technology company started by several CMU students as part of Scott Institute’s programming, continues its growth with 70,000 sq. foot office at Nova Place on Pittsburgh's North Side. Read more.
Scott Institute and CMU Alumni Showcase Startup Innovation at NREL Industry Growth Forum
Scott Institute’s Reed McManigle attended the NREL Industry Growth Forum this April to discuss the portfolio of various CMU startups and research in the energy and cleantech space. CMU alumi Kwaku Jyamfi (E&TIM ‘20), CEO of Farm to Flame Energy, Mark Kovscek (BS Mathematics and Industrial Management ’92), Founder and CEO of Conservation Labs, and Sam Pardue (MBA Tepper ’98), Founder and CEO of Indow, represented their startup companies to more than a dozen investors and corporations. Scherer Leads CMU Team to Finals of 2022 Blue Skies Competition
A CMU team, led by Faculty Affiliate Sebastian Scherer, was selected as a finalist for the NASA 2022 Blue Skies competition for their project titled: "Sustainability and Connected Autonomy: A New Era for Aviation". Learn more here
American-Made Solar Prize Hardware Track Round 5 Set! Phase Winners Announced
Ten Hardware Track teams were each awarded $100,000 in cash prizes and $75,000 in vouchers to advance their innovation from proof-of-concept to prototype in the final phase of the Round 5 American-Made Solar Prize contest. Winners announced here.

Nock and Team Develop New Metric ‘Energy Equity Gap’
Energy Fellow Destenie Nock and her team including CMU Ph.D. student Shuchen Cong have unveiled a hidden energy poverty often not captured in income-based metrics. The energy equity gap captures energy-limiting resident behavior to illustrate the divide in safety and comfort from extreme temperatures across income groups. 

Nock also published a paper focusing on how sociodemographic data is used to determine energy goals and future planning which includes “Ten Steps for the Standardization of Sociodemographic Data Practices”.

FORGE’s latest Product Development Grant is aimed at removing barriers for cleantech startups with female and non-binary leadership. The funds are aimed at boosting the trajectory of these often-underserved leaders that traditionally launch with less capital investment. Learn more and apply by June 3.
Urban Future Prize Competition
The Urban Future Lab at NYU Tandon is hosting the sixth Urban Future Prize Competition. Two cash prizes of $50,000 and admission to the ACRE Incubator to two promising cleantech startups. Applications are due June 6. Apply here.

The DOE Hydrogen Technologies Program is looking for professionals to partner to achieve the Hydrogen Energy Earthshot goal of $1 per 1 kilogram in 1 decade (“1 1 1”). Hydrogen Shot Fellows will engage with one or more HFTO technical programs, including Hydrogen Technologies, Fuel Cell Technologies, Technology Acceleration, and Systems Analysis, as well as other functional areas.
