Tacoma Boat Builders
Message in a Bottle
June 2022

Isn't it SPRING SUMMER yet?

Not a fan of today's weather? No worries, wait a day; tomorrow will be different!
I know the Groundhog said six more weeks of winter, but I wasn't expecting it to still be so cold in May and wet in June!  It's almost hard to believe summer is here.

Despite the cooler than usual weather, we are inside making the most of it; TBB has some big, big plans coming this summer.  So we'll need all hands on deck!  This month's edition has some announcements to warm you up for summer.

JAM-PACKED SUMMER ADVENTURES AHEAD!

We currently host two weekly core programs for court-connected youth, a weekly pop-up style program for youth experiencing housing insecurities, and two programs a month for youth detained at Remann Hall.
In addition to those reoccurring programs, we're ramping up Summer Programs. COMMUNITY BOATING, our week-long SHARP SISTERS program, hosting additional programming for houseless youth, and partnering with Sound Experience for opportunities aboard the environmental TALL SHIP Schooner AdventuressOH MY!

No Surprise! We're Growing Around Here:

We're looking for some fun-loving, creative, water-hyped folks to join our team!
Are you, or someone you know, passionate about working with youth? We have multiple Program Facilitators positions open(full or part-time). Check out our job postings on Indeed!

We're also searching for mission-aligned volunteers and mentors for this summer's programming!

SUMMER SHOUT-OUTS:

Seventy48 Recap:

In this year's Seventy48, Team Geraldine pulled another evening shift anchored at Owen Beach checking trackers to ensure the safety of over 120 teams!  As we collect photos to post, keep an eye out on our IG or FB pages, but for now take a look at some of what our friends posted:
@kayakphd, aka Jacob Selander, has been in the Seventy48 THREE TIMES!  This year he joined the media team and formed part of TBB's 2022 Team Geraldine.
@rubber.nugget, aka Justin Edwards, was part of the Race Support Vessel team zipping around on Rubber Nugget and sharing the world's best olives!

COMMUNITY BOATING IS BACK!

Never been on the water? We got you!!  Back by popular demand, TBB offers a summer packed with on-the-water activities for youth and families in Pierce County!  This year, we have not one, not two, but FOUR slots available weekly!  Take a pick this season on our JOTFORM (click to register today!).

In the Spotlight: Meet Kenya

Meet Kenya Storey, a Case Aide Monitor at Pierce County Juvenile Court. Her core role is connecting youth to community PYDs (Positive Youth Development programs), and supporting them to succeed!

A new and current project she's excited about is the Pathways Program - working directly with African-American boys in a one-to-on relationship encouraging them to connect to healthy opportunities that will encourage their positive development, connecting to the community, and exposing these youth to PYDs. She's also part of the program education and employment training team and the Equity and Care Teams with PCJC. As you can see, Kenya ROCKS!

Kenya and her husband moved to Washington State to be close to their grandchildren, son, and his wife. Before relocating to Washington, Kenya lived in and served her community in Ohio ["GO BUCKS"] for over 20 years, working directly with At-Risk Youth, fostering teenagers for 12 years with Youth Advocate Services, and working for Franklin County Juvenile Courts in Ohio.

Walking into Tacoma Boat Builder's, Kenya immediately felt a powerful vibe. "The staff and mentors are dedicated and genuinely care about the well-being of our youth. I knew right away that I wanted to be a part of this team. A team that encourages and creates an inclusive, collaborative culture space for our young people to speak their truth, build trust, and promote relationship building. The commitment and overall support Tacoma Boat Builders gives our youth is outstanding and pure."

Kenya is looking forward to everything Tacoma Boat Builders has to offer our young people now and in the future. She's especially excited about being a part of Sharp Sisters - a four-day camp for Pierce County self-identified women and gender-expansive young people. Sharp Sisters is all about hands-on learning the TBB way, connecting with others, and exploring creativity and artistic expression. Sharp Sisters is an opportunity for Kenya to embrace sea life and offer support for our participants!
