Harvesting the spuds. A big thank you to Anna Thompson who has volunteered to work in the garden with small groups from each class every Tuesday afternoon.

Dear Parents/Whanau

It has been a pleasure reacquainting myself with Myross Bush School and meeting all your lovely children - quite a mission trying to remember names but I am up for the challenge! Please come and introduce yourselves if you see me around the place.

The students have settled quickly into their classes and learning programmes. Jamin has left everything so well organised for me to step into the job which is greatly appreciated. I also need to thank Mel and Anna for always being there to answer my many questions. Sabbatical Leave is an invaluable opportunity for Principals to study in depth an area they are passionate about as well as providing time for reflection and refreshment - all of which will benefit the school in the future.

As I am only here for a term connecting with the community is very important so will briefly outline a little about myself. I was brought up on a farm at The Key near Te Anau, a place I still consider home. Over the years I have taught in a number of schools around the South Island and, as Jamin explained earlier, was Principal here for 10 years. My husband and I then travelled around Australia in a caravan for over 6 years and since returning to NZ I have chosen to work as an Acting Principal. Currently, we live in Invercargill and I have four stepchildren and grandchildren living here and in Australia. I enjoy time with family and friends, reading, travelling, biking, swimming and cooking.

This week we welcome whanau back to school assemblies - I believe it has been a long time since the last assembly and a lovely opportunity to celebrate learning and success with the community. Our first assembly will be held this Friday the 13th May at 2.15pm in the Activity Centre.

Nominations for this week's Myross Bush School Values Awards are:

Olive McGrath for displaying Ngakau Tapatahi “Doing the right thing even when no one else is looking” by your awesome attitude. We noticed you working hard independently, asking for help and demonstrating honesty in the class.

Samantha Parry for displaying Whakapai Ake “Be the best you can be” by being focused and engaged during learning time, showing perseverance and doing some awesome thinking in group discussions.

Shania Corson for Te Papa Atawhai “Reduce, reuse, recycle and restore, replenish” who went above and beyond when helping sort through the rubbish in Week 1. You have many inspiring ideas about reusing and recycling in Akotoa.

Archer King - "Ngakau Tapatahi - Integrity" Archer is demonstrating high levels of integrity in the classroom and in the playground. He uses his initiative when faced with problems and is reliable and hard working. Ka pai Archer!

London Harvey for Kotahitanga “Getting along together” London has settled into her new classroom well. She has made lots of friends, is a kind classmate and supports others. Keep it up London!

Ashby Gentle for Te Papa Atawhai “Reduce, reuse, recycle and restore, replenish” Ashby you are a fantastic helper at tidy up time. You start straight away and carry on till the work is done. You are a role model.

This week the Values trophy is awarded to:
Addison Matthews for Whakapai Ake “Be the best you can be” Addison has worked hard in her phonics over these last two terms. She applies herself to get the most out of her lesson and has retained lots of digraphs. Well done Addison!
We wish to send a warm welcome to Hettie who has started in Matai last week.
Congratulations to Cassie who was featured on the front page of the Southland Times on Saturday - the first female referee to referee a premier men's club rugby fixture in Southland - a great role model for our students.

Heat Ups
Please remember to put a room name (Matai / Rawee / Kawaka / Akotoa) along with the child's name on any heat-ups as these can inadvertently end up not being in the correct lunch tray. Thank you for your help with this.
Supporting the classroom and schoolwide work we are doing to promote socially and emotionally healthy ākonga, we also have the following free and confidential options available to families:
  1. Chatbus - this counselling service is available to students one day a week on-site at school. Students can self-refer through a post box in the school office and parents can make a referral by emailing the Counsellor on miles.chatbus@gmail.com
  2. Public Health Nurse - can be reached if you would like support at the following email address sarah.liggins-walters@southerndhb.govt.nz
This week our absentee rate has been sitting around 12% which is up from 9% last week.

Currently, we have 5 positive cases of Covid and 56 have recovered and returned to school. All up this equates to 38% of the school currently has or has had Covid.

The majority of our students who are at home isolating have winter cold-like symptoms and are testing negative to Covid. Thank you for your diligence in keeping unwell students at home therefore making school a healthier and safer place for all.

The following flow chart has been helpful for families if they have another covid case in the family (please refer to our website for more information):
