Special Character

Mother and Son Mass and Breakfast

Today we celebrated one of the most special events on our College calendar - the Mother and Son Mass and Breakfast. We would like to thank Fr Stephen for celebrating the Mass, Mr Patrick Walsh and his wife Paulene for attending, Mrs Mary Graham for her fabulous organising and credit to Br Anthony for taking the photos. We hope all Mothers and Sons enjoyed being together, sharing in a reflective, prayerful Mass followed by catching up with other Mums over breakfast.
The second Mother and Son Mass and Breakfast will be held on Friday 5 August, with tickets now available from our website.

Family Mass - Sunday 22 May, 10am

We warmly invite all students and their families to our Family Mass, Sunday 22 May at 10am. This special occasion sees us welcoming new Headmaster Mr Patrick Walsh and his family to our wider community. We also have the privilege and honour of welcoming the new Bishop of Auckland, Bishop Steve Lowe, who will be celebrating the Eucharist for the first time at our College. While all of our Sacred Heart boys and their families are invited to attend, we encourage our Year 7 and Year 13 students to be present. New to Sacred Heart College students will be blessed and presented with a religious medal. We believe, as a Catholic, Marist, Champagnat College, events of this nature should be cherished and shared with our families and community. We very much look forward to seeing you there.

Young Vinnies

Annual Pyjama Drive

The Young Vinnies, led by Max Byers, John Faualo and Corey Keil, are running the annual Pyjama Drive. We are requiring donations of warm, brand new children’s pyjamas for Starship Hospital’s Ronald McDonald House. This will commence on Tuesday 17 May and will run until Friday 10 June. Pyjama donations will be collected on Wednesdays during Homeroom.

Collecting for Ha'afeva - Elementary & Middle School

Could you help this little school on an Island in the Ha’apai Group of Islands in Tonga? Children aged from 5-12yrs attend this school of 50 students, based in the outer islands of Ha’apai, where there are no shops for school items or clothing. They must sew or buy everything from Nukualofa and ship it to the island which is 10 hours by boat from the mainland. The volcano that hit Ha’apai earlier this year caused catastrophic damage throughout these areas, where homes and crops were lost or experienced extensive damage.

The children and this school needs library and reading books, stationery (used but tidy is fine), drink bottles, school bags, clothing and shoes (in good condition, hot climate), sports items, activity items (educational preferably, posters (educational preferably). Perhaps you have some of these things that your children no longer need that you could donate? Please drop off in the Uniform Shop before 20 May. Many thanks.

Special Assessment Conditions for Senior Assessment Week

We ask that NCEA students please speak to their teachers about the nature and requirements of their assessments so that they can consider if they will require any of their Special Assessment Conditions. For example, check if they are using devices and how much time they are allowed. We have emailed students to remind them of this.

If they think they will need to use any of their Special Assessment Conditions for any assessment they need to book them by emailing amccarthy@sacredheart.school.nz or come to R19 by Friday 20 May at the latest.

We will do our best to accommodate any request for conditions, however, we cannot guarantee that they will have the conditions they have booked. Priority will be given to Internals for credits. Requests received after 20 May will not be considered.

Students should visit R19 if they have any questions.

Pastoral Care

"Head of Year" renamed to "Dean"

We would like to advise that going forward "Head of Year" will be referred to as "Dean". This term is commonly used, and further to internal and external feedback it provides better clarity for what the role encapsulates.

Google Classrooms while isolating

This is a reminder that if students need to isolate at home because of COVID, there is an expectation that they will keep up with the work being set by their teachers, through the Google Classrooms. If your son is unwell and therefore unable to complete the work, he will need to catch up on the work set once he has recovered. We must emphasize the importance of this so that he does not find himself behind the rest of the class when returning onsite.

Sport

SHC House Cross Country

We were thrilled to be able to hold our Cross Country Champs on Tuesday under a beautiful clear blue sky. We are truly lucky to have such fabulous grounds here at Sacred Heart and it was fantastic to see the boys showing off their fitness and running talents in front of their teachers and peers. After missing out on the Athletics and Swimming sports earlier in the year it was a great feeling to have the school back together enjoying house sporting camaraderie and competition. Our Year 9-13 cross country runners are now preparing for the upcoming local and national championships and we wish them all the very best for these.

The winning House of the day was Lenihan, followed by Marcellin, Coolahan, Pompallier, Basil and Stephen. The top individual runners from each Year Group race were:
