Graduate Research News

May - June 2022

By the time you read this we will already be half way through our week of DocFest and hopefully, if you haven't already joined one of the great sessions, you will do so before the week is out. You can see the full program of events  here.  There is no need to register - just use this link to join any session. The one link will get you into all sessions, all week, so you can easily pop in and out as you are able. We look forward to seeing you there!

We will be reviewing a number of the sessions in coming issues and recordings of the plenary sessions will be available soon. Email us at researcherdevelopment@csu.edu.au to request access.

The next issue of GR News will be published on 22nd June and contributions from staff and students are most welcome. We especially love to hear about any student achievements such as publications and appreciate any photos as well.
Please send them to RD@csu.edu.au by COB Monday 20 June.

Best wishes,
Jennifer and the ReD Team

Congratulations to Jake Fountain- best student poster at Australian Biosecurity Symposium!

The SAEVS and Gulbali Institue PhD candidate, credit's his success with the advice and learnings he gained from attending the Researcher Development session- 'How to design and award winning research poster' run by Tullio Rossi.

There was excellent engagement from delegates at the conference and the only downside was my hoarse voice at the end of the day after discussing our findings with so many interested people.
The poster would have turned out VERY differently had I not participated in the session.

Jake and his research team will be attending an international conference in August where they will be presenting a number of posters. We wish them the very best.

Published anything lately?
If you have recently had an article published we would love to hear about it!

Doctoral Research by Distance Facebook Group
*Please note this is not a CSU group
The International Doctoral Research Network (IDERN) are launching a new Facebook group focused on doctoral research by distance - https://www.facebook.com/groups/doctoralresearchbydistance
This is a space where doctoral researchers who are not based primarily on campus (for whatever reason and in whatever scenario - whether or not they are officially enrolled "by distance") can connect, ask questions, share ideas, build community, and celebrate all that is awesome and normal about being a "distance" doctoral researcher.
Group description:
This group is for anyone undertaking, considering undertaking, or interested in the experience of doctoral research by distance. Whether or not you're officially enrolled as a "distance" student, anyone engaging in off-campus, online, flexible, hybrid, cross-national or other related ways of working for either a portion or the whole of their doctoral enrolment is welcome here.

Members from all geographic contexts and all disciplines are welcome - this is a place to celebrate doing YOUR doctoral research YOUR way at YOUR time(s) and YOUR place(s).
In this group, you can connect with others on similar journeys; seek and offer advice within our community; learn from those who have gone before; and access useful resources, tools, and perspectives to support your doctoral journey.

Others who support, work with, or conduct research related to doctoral study are also able to join the group but must remember that the purpose of the group is to support doctoral students researching by distance.

The group is hosted by a team of researchers and doctoral supervisors with an interest in understanding, supporting, and advocating for those undertaking doctoral research by distance. This group is a safe space and members' contributions will not be used for research or other purposes without explicit permission. All prospective members must answer membership questions and agree to abide by the group rules.
Opportunities
How about sharing your research story on community radio?

The Researcher Development team are very excited to be working with the team at  Radio 2MCE to produce a monthly program featuring the research stories of our graduate research candidates. On the third Thursday of the month at 5.30pm we will feature two interviews where researchers will be able to share their research and a little about their research story. Interviews will be recorded in advance via zoom so location and time zones are not an issue.

If this is something you would like to participate in please submit an Expression of Interest form and our team will be in touch to book an interview.

Listen to podcasts of our first two programs HERE
You can listen to the next program live at 2MCE on Thursday 16 June at 5:30pm

31 May 2022     Structuring and writing journal articles
Many areas of academic life such as finding employment and winning research grants depend on establishing a publication record. However, writing research papers does not come naturally to most of us. This workshop has been designed to assist you in the process of writing an article. In this workshop, learn how to get the ball rolling including choosing the right journal, what to consider when targeting a relevant journal for publication, how to structure your paper, and how to write effectively to best communicate your argument. We will draw on sample articles from relevant fields to demonstrate journal article writing principles and discuss strategies for dealing with feedback and reviewing your paper.  (2 hours, 1000-1200 AEST)  Presenters:  Emmaline Lear and Holly Randell-Moon.

2nd Jun 2022     Creating the Seven Secrets of Highly Successful Graduate Research Candidates (for supervisors)
You know what your Graduate Research Candidates should be doing, but it just doesn’t seem to be happening. Despite your best efforts to set up good habits for your student, it does not work. Why is this, and what can you do to make completing a Research Higher Degree easier for your students and for you? Students attending the seven secrets workshop have consistently reported a marked improvement in their progress towards completing their Degree. Now they have asked us to please tell their supervisors the same things! This course gives you practical strategies to deal with common problems such as: supervisor/student relations, dealing with writer’s block, attitude (or lack thereof!) in relation to the Degree – it’s not a Nobel prize, getting your student to seek help when they are stuck, the student who never has enough time, treating the Degree like a job, keeping on going when the going gets tough. (2.5hrs, 1000-1230 AEST) Presenter - Hugh Kearns

7th Jun 2022      Graduate Research Candidate Induction
Welcome to new Graduate Research Candidates! A variety of presenters from Research Services & Graduate Studies and Library will share essential information about what you need to know about getting started. Your responsibilities, expectations, probation and timelines, the support services available to you, your supervisory team relationship, the training and development opportunities available to you and more. This session also forms part of your probationary requirements. (3 hrs, 0930-1230 AEST) Presenters - Various

8th Jun 2022      Ethics Café
Ethics applications can be complicated! The Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) are facilitating open sessions where they will work through the application process, what should be included in the research proposal and will address common areas of concern and error. It's a great opportunity to gain a better understanding of the requirements and to receive good advice, with the aim being to hopefully avoid any need to resubmit.  These sessions are open to Researchers, Academics and students who will be submitting an application for research involving human ethics.  Presented by HREC. (60 mins, 1100-1200 AEST).

9th Jun 2022      NVivo (this session is FULL)
NVivo helps you discover more from your qualitative and mixed methods data. Uncover richer insights and produce clearly articulated, defensible findings backed by rigorous evidence. You can: Import data from virtually any source; analyze data with advanced management, query, and visualization tools; Ask complex questions of your data to identify themes and draw clear conclusions; Create reports; and Achieve more robust research results in less time. This course works with a sample dataset, however you are encouraged to work with your own coded dataset if desired (literature or empirical data). If you don't yet have coded data this workshop will give you insights into what is possible when you reach that stage.  As this workshop moves you beyond basic coding with a range of queries to help identify patterns in data, if you are new to NVivo and as a prerequisite to this session, you are required to go through some pre-materials, a link to these is contained in the registration.3 hours, 1000-1300 AESTLimited to 15 participants. Presenter: Dr Jenine Beekhuyzen, Adroit Research
