Elder Abuse Awareness Month
June is World Elder Abuse Awareness month, with June 15 th being the designated day. This provides an opportunity to raise awareness and share information on how to stop and prevent abuse or mistreatment from happening. One important way we can all make a difference is to know the warning signs. A few include:
- Dirty or unsuitable clothing for the weather
- Isolation or caregiver restricting visitors
- Sudden changes in paperwork such as power of attorney
- Bills not being paid
- Unexplained bruises or reports of frequent falls
If you suspect abuse or neglect, report your concerns to Adult Protective Services by calling 855-444-3911. For more information on Elder Abuse, visit www.ProtectKentSeniors.org or www.michigan.gov/elderabuse.

In conjunction with Older Michiganians Day, the Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan (AAAWM) hosted Senior Rally Day to mark the occasion. In an outdoor event at the agency, seniors throughout the region came together to learn about these advocacy issues! “We recognize that many of our senior advocates missed the comradery and energy of being together to advocate. Senior Rally Day gave them the chance to come together in a unique and safe way, our parking lot was transformed into a gathering space complete with a large white tent, live music, speakers, and advocacy. It was so fun to see folks advocating together after so long,” shared Sheri Harris, AAAWM Advocacy Coordinator.
