Welcome to the church we love! As Terre Haute’s first established congregation we maintain a 195-year tradition of service to God. We pray you will encounter the Spirit in worship with us.
We welcome children of all ages to worship with us throughout the service. We have placed children's activity bags in front of the railing between the back entrances to the sanctuary.
Following the Children’s Lesson we offer the Children’s Worship program for ages 4 years through first grade. Children can exit the sanctuary with the adult leaders.
Nursery care is available downstairs at the northeast corner of the building for ages birth through three years.
Please do not hesitate to ask our ushers any questions you may have. Again, welcome!

Prayer of the Day
Lord Jesus Christ,
show us your glory
so that we may know the glory of God.
Good Shepherd, teach us your way
so that we may follow you all our lives.
Beloved of God, give us your love
so that we may truly love one another.
All this we pray in your holy name.

Choral Introit
Call to Worship
Leader: Give glory to our God,
People: Who on this day won victory over death.
Leader: Raising Jesus from the grave,
People: And giving us eternal life!
Leader: Let us worship our Lord, Father, Son
and Holy Spirit.
All: Let us worship our Lord, the Savior
of the world!
*Hymn #4 Holy God, We Praise Your Name grosser gott, wir loben dich
God calls us to Confession and Forgiveness
*Call to Confession
Leader: If we claim to have no sin, we lie
and the truth is not in us.
People: If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just, and will forgive and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Leader: Let us confess our sins before God.
*Confession of Sin
Almighty God: you love us,
but we have not loved you;
you call, but we have not listened.
We walk away from neighbors in need, wrapped up in our own concerns.
We have gone along with evil,
prejudice, warfare and greed.
God of grace, help us to face up to ourselves,
so that as you move toward us in mercy,
we may repent, turn to you
and receive forgiveness.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
(Pause for silent reflection.)
Among baptism’s symbolic meanings is the reminder that Jesus atoned for our sins. We pour water into the baptismal font just before the Assurance of Pardon to dramatize Jesus’ washing us clean.
*Assurance of Pardon
Leader: Who is in a position to condemn?
Only Christ, and Christ died for us,
Christ rose for us,
Christ reigns in power over us,
Christ prays for us.
People: If anyone is in Christ, that one
becomes a new person altogether—
the past has finished and gone,
all has become fresh and new.
Leader: Friends: believe the Good News
of the Gospel.
People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Hallelujah!
*Response Gloria Patri gloria patri
Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen, amen.
*The Peace See John 20:19, 21, 26
Since God has forgiven us in Christ,
let us forgive one another.
The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
And also with you.
The Word of God
Children’s Lesson Valeri Kershaw
After the lesson, children ages 4 years to 1st grade may leave
to attend Children’s Worship in room 200. Child care is
available for younger children in the nursery (enter through
room 108).
Prayer for Illumination
Scripture Reading Psalm 24:1-6
The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it,
the world, and those who live in it;
for he has founded it on the seas,
and established it on the rivers.
Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?
And who shall stand in his holy place?
Those who have clean hands and pure hearts,
who do not lift up their souls to what is false,
and do not swear deceitfully.
They will receive blessing from the Lord,
and vindication from the God of their salvation.
Such is the company of those who seek him,
who seek the face of the God of Jacob.
Anthem Precious Lord, Take My Hand Courtney
Scripture Reading John 13:31-35
When he had gone out, Jesus said,
“Now the Son of Man has been glorified,
and God has been glorified in him.
If God has been glorified in him,
God will also glorify him in himself
and will glorify him at once.
Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me;
and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’
I give you a new commandment,
that you love one another.
Just as I have loved you,
you also should love one another.
By this everyone will know
that you are my disciples,
if you have love for one another.”
Sermon Glory Rev. Mike Riggins
God calls us to respond to the Word
*Hymn #701 Lord, Prepare Me sanctuary (Sing twice)
Prayers of Intercession
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Offertory Meditation on “Eventide” Monk

Praise Holy Spirit evermore;
Praise Triune God, whom we adore. Amen.
God’s People Go Out into the World
Reception of New Members
The Sacrament of Baptism
All children are invited to sit at the front during the baptism.
The Institution of Baptism
Hear the words of Jesus:
“All authority in heaven and on earth
has been given to me.
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name
of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you, and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.”
Hear also these words from Holy Scripture:
Galatians 3:27,28
As many of you as were baptized into Christ
have clothed yourselves with Christ.
There is no longer Jew or Greek,
there is no longer slave or free,
there is no longer male or female;
for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.
Obeying the words of our Lord, Jesus,
and confident of his promises,
we baptize those whom God has called.
In Baptism, God claims us and
puts a sign on us to show that we belong to God.
God frees us from sin and death,
uniting us with Jesus Christ
in his death and resurrection.
By water and the Holy Spirit,
we are made members of the Church,
the body of Christ,
and joined to Christ’s ministry of love, peace and justice.
Presentation
Elder: On behalf of session, I present
Henry Parks Rubey to receive the Sacrament of Baptism.
Minister: Lucas and Megan, do you desire that Henry be baptized?
Parents: We do.
Minister: Relying on God’s grace, do you promise to live the Christian faith, and to teach that faith to your child?
Parents: We do.
Covenant of the Congregation
Elder: (to congregation) Do you, as members of the Church of Jesus Christ, promise to guide and nurture Henry by word and deed, with love and prayer, encouraging him to know and follow Christ, and to be a faithful member of the Church?
People: We do.
Minister: And now, I ask the children of Central:
Will you welcome Henry into the church family, and will you pray for him?
Children: Yes, we will.
Renunciations
Pastor: Lucas and Megan, trusting in the gracious mercy of God, do you turn from the ways of sin and renounce evil and its power in the world?
Parents: We do.
Pastor: Who is your Lord and Savior?
Parents: Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior.
Pastor: Will you be Christ’s faithful disciple, obeying his Word and showing his love?
Parents: We will, with God’s help.
*Profession of Faith (Congregation, please stand)
Pastor: With the whole church, let us confess our faith.
Do you believe in God, the Father almighty?
People: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
Pastor: Do you believe in Jesus Christ?
People: I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
Pastor: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?
People: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
(Congregation, please be seated)
Thanksgiving over the water
Minister: God, our creator,
we thank you for your faithfulness
promised in this sacrament,
and for the hope we have in your son Jesus.
As we baptize with water,
baptize with Holy Spirit,
so that what we say may be your word
and what we do may be your work.
By your power, may we be made one
with Christ our Lord
in common faith and purpose.
People: God, who calls us from death to life:
We give ourselves to you
and with the Church through all the ages, we thank you for your saving love
in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Prayers for the Week
Morning
Spirit of truth and love,
Life giving, holy Dove,
Speed forth Thy flight;
Move on the waters' face,
Spreading the beams of grace,
And in earth's darker place
Let there be light!
Amen.
-- John Marriott (1780-1825)
Evening
O Lord Jesus Christ,
who received the children who came to You,
receive also from me, Your child, this evening prayer.
Shelter me under the shadow of Your wings,
that in peace I may lie down and sleep;
and waken me in due time,
that I may glorify You,
for You alone are righteous and merciful.
Amen.
