Tick Activity
Spring is also the season of tick activity. As temperatures rise and we spend more time outdoors, be vigilant about protecting your animals, children, and yourselves against increasing tick activity.
Here are 5 good reminders for protecting yourself outdoors:
- Wear light-colored long-sleeve shirts and pants, as well as close-toed shoes. Tuck pants into socks, tuck shirts into pants.
- Treat outdoor clothes & shoes with tick repellent permethrin. Use insect repellents (such as DEET) according to directions (apply sunscreen first before repellent). Never use DEET under clothing or on pets.
- Avoid kneeling or sitting in brushy areas. Inspect clothing and body. A lint roller can help remove small ticks from clothing.
- Shower when possible after being outdoors.
- Put clothes in the dryer on hot for 10 min before washing to help kill any lingering ticks.
