Spring is here!

And we are so excited... we just wet our plants.
Seedlings reach for the sun as they get ready for warmer weather!

As spring is officially ushered into 2022, the Talbot County Master Gardener Volunteers have a couple of reminders and important information as you get busy outdoors.

Talbot County Free Seed Library
Celebrates 5 Years!

This spring marks the 5th year of the Talbot County Free See Library! We would like to celebrate and thank our Master Gardener Volunteer, Missy, who has diligently kept operations going smoothly. The program also wants to thank the Talbot County Free Library for their continued support!

To celebrate the occasion, a jar full of lima beans has been placed at the Talbot County Free Library- Easton Branch; we are taking guesses for how many beans are in the jar, and the individual with the closest guess will get a prize.

Guesses can be made virtually
HERE, or in person at the library. Anyone may guess, but winners must be able to pick up the prize in Easton. Guesses will be taken through the month of May 2022. Questions can be directed to: mboley@umd.edu.
Sweetbay magnolia (Magnolia virginiana) have fragrant, creamy white blooms in the spring. This native magnolia has a great shape and grows well in wetter soils.

Planting Trees & Shrubs

Spring is a great time to plant woody material, like native trees and shrubs. Not only can they be an attractive addition to the landscape, but they serve a variety of eco-services in the landscape.

The first year of care is critical to their establishment; trees are a long-term investment, and should be cared for properly:

Vegetable Planting Calendar (UME-HGIC)

This guide can help plan your vegetable garden through the seasons- use this link to see the full calendar. Frost dates are calculated based on central Maryland, but you can find the average frost date of your area at https://garden.org/apps/frost-dates/

Tick Activity

Spring is also the season of tick activity. As temperatures rise and we spend more time outdoors, be vigilant about protecting your animals, children, and yourselves against increasing tick activity.

Here are 5 good reminders for protecting yourself outdoors:
  1. Wear light-colored long-sleeve shirts and pants, as well as close-toed shoes. Tuck pants into socks, tuck shirts into pants.
  2. Treat outdoor clothes & shoes with tick repellent permethrin. Use insect repellents (such as DEET) according to directions (apply sunscreen first before repellent). Never use DEET under clothing or on pets.
  3. Avoid kneeling or sitting in brushy areas. Inspect clothing and body. A lint roller can help remove small ticks from clothing.
  4. Shower when possible after being outdoors.
  5. Put clothes in the dryer on hot for 10 min before washing to help kill any lingering ticks.

There are many species of ticks in Maryland, and some are capable of transmitting diseases. To properly identify the species of tick, and the risk of disease, there are some great resources available:
