Dedicated Castro Adobe volunteers surprised with Volunteer Medallion Award
Castro Adobe State Historic Park docents Charlie and Patty Kieffer were surprised with California State Parks’ highest honor for volunteer service, the prestigious Volunteer Medallion Award, on Sunday, May 14, at the Castro Adobe.
With over 30 years of volunteer service, the Kieffers have shared the stories, facts and history about the Castro Adobe and Wilder State Park. They have led tours, performed community outreach, supported visiting school groups, and shared their knowledge and experience with other docents. Their hard work and commitment are seen in the passion of their presentations and the excitement stirred in their visitors. California State Parks extends its heartfelt gratitude.
Patty and Charlie, who is also a Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks Board member, celebrated with local friends and staff from State Parks and Friends. To round out the festivities, Bob and Denise Gomez performed a special song that Bob wrote about the Kieffers' volunteering activities.
"There was nobody in the crowd whom I don’t love," Patty said.

Bald Eagles spotted at New Brighton State Beach and Schwan Lagoon
Birders have been thrilled to catch glimpses — and amazing photos of — bald eagles at New Brighton State Beach in Capitola and Schwan Lagoon, part of Twin Lakes State Beach near Santa Cruz, in recent weeks.
Bald eagles have been observed nesting and raising broods in the Santa Cruz Mountains for almost a decade. Biologists reported in 2017 that at least 30 breeding pairs of the bird of prey were observed along the California Coast from Marin to Santa Barbara, including in Santa Cruz County.

Reimagining Big Basin Vision to be released, public meeting planned

Planning will continue in phases. Read more and sign up for email updates.
