Tell us about your family and how you heard about PJ Library!
We are the Malichenko family. Pavel, Lilia, Sean (10), Dean (6) and Eve (6-month-old). We came from Israel five and a half years ago. This is our second emigration. I came from Ukraine and my husband is from Uzbekistan. It’s very important to us to keep Jewish roots and traditions at home, so when I heard about PJ Library from our friends, I hurried up to sign up!
Tell us about your experiences with PJ Library and how this program (books, events and/or initiatives) has impacted your family.
PJ Library books and events help us to raise our kids’ Jewish awareness. Our kids are very excited whenever they get books by mail. PJ Library books help my kids learn about Jewish traditions, stories, and holidays; they are feeling the Jewish spirit here in Canada! My kids believe that they are important to the Jewish community, and they are part of Jewish life in Winnipeg.
What are your child(ren)'s favourite PJ Library books?
My kids like many books; It’s very hard to choose one or two favourite books! The books that my kids often reread at home are “A Holiday for Ari Ant” by Sylvia Rouss, “Sharkbot Shalom” by Jenna Waldman, “The Best Sukkot Pumpkin Ever” by Laya Steinberg, “The Sabbath Lion” a Jewish folktale in Algeria, and “A Zombie Vacation” by Lisa Rose.
What has been your child's/family's favourite PJ Library program or initiative and why?
My kids really enjoyed taking part in last year's online celebration of Rosh Hashanah. They liked the Holiday Kit with resources to use at home and to learn about this holiday. I hope, at this stage of the pandemic, we will be able to take a more active part in the Jewish community celebrations and activities.
Anything else you would like to share?
I want to say a big thank you to PJ Library for this great opportunity to receive books and to be part of our great Jewish community. My kids know that the Jewish community is thinking about them. My kids are very fortunate to get books every month from PJ Library. If my kids are happy, I am happy too!
