Gratton Workshop

Creating Character with Cast-off Materials
Papier-mâché with Laura Wacha

Saturday, June 25, 9 am - 4 pm & Sunday, June 26, 1-4 pm

Create something with character from simple, recycled materials and paper. Papier-mâché is an enormously versatile craft medium. It enables artists to create three dimensional objects out of found objects and pieces of paper stuck together with glue or starch. In this workshop, Laura demonstrates the step-by-step process for creating colorful sculptures filled with personality. Sculpt interesting characters and bring them to life through postures, pattern, and expressions.

The workshop is open to paying students, ages 18+, and those with a financial need of all artistic experience levels. We ask that students pay what they can afford up to the suggested donation of $125. Supplies are included. To register, please contact Amber Smith at 575-500-0363 or museum@roswell-nm.gov.

The Gratton Workshop Program is endowed by the RMAC Foundation through funds generously established by Lorene Johnson Gratton, a long-time museum member, in support of workshop opportunities for adults.

We've all heard that pollinators; bees, butterflies among other species, are under threat, in large part due to habitat loss. Let's plant more of the wildflowers and other native plants that pollinators love to pollinate. Come make your own seed native bombs to throw in an area that needs replanting or somewhere you can watch them sprout!

Second Saturdays are generously supported by the RMAC Foundation.

Call for Volunteers

Museum volunteers help visitors get the most out of their experience by welcoming and assisting visitors, leading field trips, helping with classes and Second Saturdays, and prepping for and assisting at special events.

We look for volunteers who are 16 years of age or older and can commit 6 to 12 months of service on a weekly or monthly basis. Fluency in more than one language is helpful but not required; no previous arts experience is necessary. Ongoing training and education is provided. Weekday, weekend, and evening shifts are available and we can accommodate a variety of schedules. To learn more, please visit here or contact Jessica Parham at j.parham@roswell-nm.gov.

1 p.m.: MOON: 1969-2019
This amazing tribute, dedicated to the Apollo 11 mission, covers the history of the program, the launch, the activity on the moon’s surface and the return to Earth.

3 p.m.: SIZING UP SPACE
Sizing Up Space explores the scale of the universe. The show was created by participants of the Blender Production Workshop at the 2009 Mediaglobe Users Group Conference. Most of the participants were modeling and animating with Blender for the very first time.

5 p.m.: THE HOT AND ENERGETIC UNIVERSE
High Energy Astrophysics plays a key role in understanding the universe. These radiations reveal the processes in the hot and violent Universe. This science also probes hot gas in clusters of galaxies, which are the most massive objects in the Universe. Finally, high-energy radiation provides important information about our own Galaxy, neutron stars, supernova remnants and stars like our Sun which emit copious amounts of high energy radiation.

Fridays at 7 p.m. and Second Saturday at 11 a.m.:
THE INCREDIBLE SUN / AURORA STORM
Every second the Sun emits million times more energy than the world consumes every year. Where does such a huge amount of power come from? Discover our star through the breathtaking timelapses. Thanks to the real images taken by the Solar Dynamics Observatory and processed by advanced mathematical methods, you will experience the true nature of the Sun and find out that it is far from being as calm as it seems at first glance.

Use 11th Street planetarium entrance for Friday evening shows.
