A Message from the Dean

Aloha Thompson School ‘ohana, 
The 2021-2022 school year is almost to an end! You have done such amazing and inspiring work in this time filled with so many challenges and so many joys! Our school has much to be proud of, and grateful for, in our students, faculty, staff, and alumni! 

A huge mahalo to Theresa Kreif and Amanda Lindsey who have made Thompson School Connections Newsletter possible this year to share the wonderful accomplishments and achievements across our school. 

This week, I was thrilled to celebrate at the 2022 UH Mānoa Awards Ceremony, which honored our awardees from the last few years, including (pictured below) 2021 Board of Regents Medal for Excellence in Teaching honoree, Jane Chung-Do, Associate Professor in Public Health, and 2022 Student Excellence in Research Award honoree, Samantha Keaulana-Scott, PhD Candidate, Public Health. Also honored were Robin Arnt, Junior Specialist, Social Work, Alan Katz, Professor, Public Health, and Noreen Mokuau, Retired Dean and Professor Emerita of the Thompson School who all received a special recognition for their dedicated service on the UH COVID-19 Health and Well-Being Working Group during this pandemic. I was also honored to join the Ke A'o Mau community workday at Kākoʻo ʻŌiwi in He'eia  with students and faculty from across our school (pictured below). 

Many graduations and commencements events, capstones and dissertations presentations, and final papers and final exam submissions are yet to come! These represent tremendous achievements and also tremendous commitments of time, energy, and work. I hope you have much to celebrate with your colleagues, friends, and loved ones in this season, and find strength from them also to help support you in the last busy weeks of the semester!

In particular we are excited to celebrate OPHS Associate Professor Jane Chung-Do, DrPH on her receipt of the 2021 Regents Medal for Excellence in Teaching.  

We are also excited to celebrate Samantha Keaulana-Scott, MSW, current Office of Public Health Studies PhD Student & RWJF Health Policy Research Scholar who will be receiving the Office of the Vice Provost for Research and Scholarship 2022 OVPRS Student Award for Excellence in Research.

Alumni Profile
Learn more about Boston University Dean Jorge Delva who earned his BSW, MSW, and PhD from the Thompson School

Long before Jorge Delva became the Dean of the Boston University School of Social Work and a national expert on health inequities, he was a teenager taking classes at Kapiʻoloani Community College and considering becoming an electrical engineer.

He learned about the field of social work from his mother, who had considered becoming a social worker before she became a teacher. Reading course descriptions for social work classes made him realize they were all about how to help society. “I realized that’s what I wanted to do,” Delva says.

He embarked on a career to study mental and behavioral health, and the role of culture in both. Over time, he completed his BSW, MSW, and PhD in social welfare all at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Now, in his leadership role in Boston, his experiences in Hawaiʻi continue to influence him.

Journal of Public Health Student Capstones

We would like to introduce you to the Journal of Public Health Student Capstones (www.jphsc.org)!

Students from public health institutions regularly produce significant work from capstone projects but often don’t publish their findings, potentially missing an opportunity to further their public health careers. Mental Health First Aid Doctoral Student Grants
From the National Council for Mental Wellbeing

The Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) USA Doctoral Student Grants represent a commitment by the National Council for Behavioral Health to grow the research behind and evaluation of all MHFA programs. Each year, the grant will provide a one-time award of $5,000 to four outstanding full-time doctoral students who demonstrate significant potential as researchers in their fields of study and who are interested in evaluating the outcomes of MHFA trainings in the U.S.

Eligibility

  • Full-time doctoral student pursuing a degree in psychology, public health, or related field of study.
  • Previous evaluation experience and demonstrated ability to document findings through publications and/or presentations.
  • Documented experience with MHFA (e.g., as an MHFA Instructor or Coordinator) and/or strong interest in MHFA.

Requirements

Once funded, doctoral grant recipients must:

  • Submit regular research updates to the MHFA team.
  • Participate in quarterly research calls with other grantees.
  • Submit a final report of research findings to the MHFA team within two years of receiving the grant.
  • Participate as a presenter at an MHFA-sponsored event highlighting research.
  • Pursue a formal publication or presentation opportunity. (MHFA- or National Council-sponsored opportunities, such as NatCon, the MHFA Summit or a MHFA Research Symposium, may be allowed).

Minimum Qualifications:

  3. Experience in the techniques relevant to Epidemiology, Public Health, Economic, or Social Science research
  4. Experience with institutional review boards, human subject protection, HIPAA compliance, and regulatory requirements

  6. Familiarity with substance abuse prevention, mental health, health interventions, healthcare system, and criminal justice system

The NIH Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Health Scientific Interest Group (NIH AANHPI-HSIG) will host this two-day event on Wednesday-Thursday, May 4-5 to celebrate AANHPI heritage month, highlight AANHPI research achievements, and assess research needs. The main theme of the 2022 conference is "Mechanism and Translational Research to Improve Health and Therapeutic Outcomes for AA and NHPI Populations." NIMHD Director Eliseo J. UH Strategic Plan Town Halls

As President Lassner announced on March 8, UH System is moving forward on a new Strategic Plan, 2023–2029. This process builds upon the Third Decade Report, the President's Post-Pandemic Hawaiʻi white paper, and UH's progress on Strategic Directions 2015–21. We know the semester is quickly coming to a close, so in order to engage as many faculty, staff and students as possible, we are hosting four town halls before the end of the term.

We also encourage the UH community to respond to a survey about priorities for the strategic plan and process for strategic planning. Deadline for providing input via the survey is Friday, May 6, 2022.

Over the summer we will invite the community to engage in the strategic planning process and also continue with the planning process so that when students and faculty return in the Fall, we will discuss a draft and host additional town halls at that time.  Information about the strategic planning process can be found here.

Mini Symposium on
Indigeneity, Sustainability, and Resilience Research

The Department of Curriculum Studies, together with the International and Special Programs unit in the Dean’s Office are happy to announce the upcoming Mini Symposium on Indigeneity, Sustainability, and Resilience Research – Interdisciplinary Cross-Cultural Perspectives.

The idea for this mini symposium came out of discussions led by Dr. Pauline Chinn together with Dr. Hirofumi Kato at the Center for Ainu and Indigenous Studies (CAIS) and his colleagues at the Global Station for Indigenous Studies and Cultural Diversity (GSI) at Hokkaido University.  We decided that a mini interdisciplinary symposium would be a good forum for researchers (faculty as well as students) from both institutions to learn about each other’s work related to indigeneity, sustainability, and/or resilience research and education. All presenters were also asked to explore the intersection of all three themes in their presentations.

Upon sending our the call for proposals last month, we received numerous submissions from Hawai‘i as well as Japan, on a range of research. Our hope is that this exploratory symposium paves the way for future collaborations on research and education on these topics between our institutions.

Community Health Worker Fall 2022 Cohort

We are excited to announce, we will be starting another statewide cohort in August 2022! Tuition will be waived for all 16-credits.

Online classes begin on August 22nd and will be offered part time, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-8:30pm. More scheduling details to come. The courses and term schedule are as follows:

In order to participate, please follow these steps for consideration in the CHW Program. Following these steps does not guarantee enrollment. However, they are all required for acceptance. Be sure to read all instructions carefully.

  1. Apply to Kapiʻolani Community College for Fall 2022 at your earliest convenience, deadline is August 1, 2022 but the sooner you can get enrolled in the college the better. Be sure to select "Community Health Worker" as your major. 
  2. AFTER you have been ACCEPTED to KapCC fill out this google form.
  3. Attend a CHW info session via Zoom (Meeting ID: 941 2554 0902). You are welcome to attend an info session prior to completing steps 1 & 2.

Once you have completed all three steps and are accepted into the program, we will send out registration instructions.

Student Employment Opportunities 
Native Hawaiian Undergraduate Research Assistant for
Native Hawaiian Resilience Project (Summer 2022)

 
Work Schedule: 06/01/2022 – 07/31/2022, 32 hours per week, flexible work schedule. This position is open to UH Mānoa students who are of Native Hawaiian descent/lineage. Work will be in-person and virtual.

Pay Rate: $14.90/hr. A laptop and required software will be provided for the duration of the employment.
 
Background: Holu Kanaka Hawai’i – Native Hawaiian Daily Pathways to Resilience This study seeks to explore sources of Native Hawaiian resilience via (1) personal stories of resilience, (2) how Native Hawaiian ancestors have dealt with their generation's challenges, and (3) Native Hawaiian values that are essential for Native Hawaiian resilience. We talk story to Native Hawaiian adults about their personal stories of resilience in the context of their past and current daily challenges as well as challenges that are the transgenerational effects of colonization. This will be complemented by a diary and survey study with Native Hawaiian adults in order to see how everyday experiences, the small things in life, contribute to Native Hawaiian resilience. Furthermore, historians will be interviewed as well as historical literature and media such as documentaries will be analyzed to get an insight into ancestral practices of resilience. This project is meant to support the revitalization of Native Hawaiian culture and to provide knowledge that can help to implement wellbeing- and resilience-supporting interventions that respect the Native Hawaiian history and culture.

Qualifications:
• UHM undergraduate student in academic good standing in Native Hawaiian studies, social work, health and human services, public health, ethnic studies, psychology, or a related field at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa.
• Native Hawaiian descent/lineage and identification with Native Hawaiian culture.
• Knowledge about Native Hawaiian history and culture is beneficial.
• Enjoy to talk story with Native Hawaiians adults of 18 years and older (also kupuna).
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Competency in general computer programs (e.g., Microsoft Office Online, Zoom, Google features, etc.).
• Work responsively and independently in a timely manner with supervision.
• Work-place skills: reliable, responsible, efficient, detail oriented, flexible, self-driven, organized, interest in learning.
• Ability to work remotely: working from home with stable internet connection.
• CITI training certificate (must be completed before the start).

Duties:
• Recruitment of Native Hawaiian adults (young adults, makua, kupuna)
• Conduction of interviews and oral diaries. You will talk story multiple times with the same persons.
• Transcribe interviews and diaries.
• Code qualitative data.
• Prepare survey and diary data for quantitative analysis.
• Communicate with study participants to reflect together about the content of their stories.
• Attend weekly project meetings.
• Attend daily and weekly planning and reflection meetings.
• Work together with other research assistants.
• Complete all training and independent work as required.
• Co-create and adhere to a mentorship plan.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
