BARKING NEWS

We are so excited to be back out in the community again and participating in events. We have missed connecting with you and sharing what has been happening at the home. We have attended a handful of events so far and have a long list of events coming up. We would love to see you and our alumni at one!

We have settled into our temporary Home while we continue raising funds for our new Home at Kurnell. We have appreciated everyone's patience while we have settled in and have been excited to welcome back visitors (by appointment) to our temporary Homes, to welcome their own furry friends into their homes!

We had the pleasure last month of hosting the Companion Animal Rescue Awards and helped launch this years awards, now in their 5th year. There are some great new categories this year and we encourage you to submit a nomination if somebody comes to mind!

We have had many animals come through our doors who are looking for their forever homes. If you, or someone you know, are looking for a new friend, visit our adopt page here.

HAPPY TAILS

Cat Backpacks Unsuitable for Pets

We have all seen cat owners carrying around their furry friend in cute bubble backpacks, especially in online videos and photos. The pets look cute to humans, but are these bags safe and comfortable for the cat?

Benji the cat would attest that NO! These bags are not safe and are rather scary. Benji was abandoned on the Sydney Dogs & Cats Home doorstep in one of these cat bags. While these bags may look handy and convenient and makes cats look like little space travellers, these bags are uncomfortable, stuffy and makes cats like Benji become scared and frightened of people, making it difficult for them to trust.

Read more about Benji's story and why cat backpacks aren't suitable for cats.

Companion Animal Rescue Awards - Share Your Story to Win

Calling all foster carers and pet adopters! The Companion Animal Rescue Awards is back again for its fifth year with the addition of two new categories, the Ivory Coat Foster Carer Story and the Ivory Coat People's Rescue Story.

We couldn't do what we do without our amazing foster carers and of course our amazing adopters, who open their homes up to a new furry family member. We would love for our community to submit their stories!

A Side of Butter

Butter the cat came to the Home in March 2022 where he instantly won over the staff with his strong headbutts and extremely friendly personality. It was difficult to take any photos or videos of him as all he wanted was to rub himself on you and receive all the pats and cuddles he could get!

There may have been a reason why Butter has the sweetest personality, the vet team discovered in a consultation that Butter actually has diabetes. If managed correctly, animals with diabetes can live long and healthy lives, but it would take a special type of person to commit to the ongoing medical care that a diagnosis such as diabetes presents.

Lily the Adventure Cat

Sara and her partner Chris, had been looking to find an adventurous pet to fit into their lifestyle and be included in all their activities. Having previously had an adventurous dog and cat, they were hoping their new pet would be willing to walk on the lead and join in on all their journeys. They were so committed to welcoming a new pet into their lives, that they even moved house as their previous landlord didn’t allow pets.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Event's are Back!

We are jumping for joy that events are back and we are able to get back out into the community and talk about the great things happening at the Home!

We recently attended the RSCPA Healthy Pet Community Day in Coogee where some of our vet team were busy with cat consults, were invited to attend an Easter Event at Bunnings Kingsgrove, dished out kitten cuddles at Blacktown Youth Week and had a great time at the Oatley Lions Community Market Day.

We have plenty of events lined up for the rest of the year including North Sydney Bark in the Park, The Dog Lovers Show Sydney, and we have a running team participating in this year's City2Surf!

If you would like to know what events Sydney Dogs & Cats Home will be attending throughout the year, make sure to Like us on Facebook.

Join out City2Surf Running Team

This year's City2Surf is set to be one of the biggest ones yet as it returns after the pandemic. It's not too late to join the Sydney Dogs & Cats Home running team and raise money for all the animals that find themselves at the Home and join in on the world's largest fun run.

This year's City2Surf will be held on Sunday 14th of August and we are aiming to raise $5000 for the Home. If you would like to join our running team or make a donation, click on the link here.

Encourage your friends and family to get involved, make a donation or if running isn't your thing, join us at the finish line as we cheer on our running team!
