Given the ongoing war in Ukraine, ISD is continuing to analyse Russian information operations. We have identified the origins of the #IStandWithRussia campaign, explored an antisemitic conspiracy theory being used to justify the invasion, and uncovered a network of Twitter accounts that appeared to have been hijacked to spread pro-Chinese Communist Party narratives including blaming the US for Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The murky origins of the #IstandwithRussia hashtag
Researchers at ISD tracked the #IstandwithRussia campaign since the start of the invasion of the Ukraine, unearthing a dubious set of profiles, pages, channels and groups working together to get the hashtag trending.

New research from ISD's Ciarán O’Connor, in collaboration with the Southern Poverty Law Center, examines how this tool enables the platform and creators to profit from chats promoting violence, conspiracies, misinformation and hate.

ISD has identified a small network of 33 Twitter accounts that appear to have been hijacked and used to spread pro-CCP (Chinese Communist Party) narratives.

What can the most shared URLs on social media during the French election tell us about public opinion of the vote?
ISD analysis found that election-related links shared on mainstream Twitter during the French Presidential election campaign diverged from those in conspiracy, extremist and anti-establishment communities .

Misogynist content is being recommended to boys and young men on YouTube 
ISD explored algorithmic recommendations on YouTube & YouTube Shorts to boys and young men using test accounts, all of which were recommended misogynist content by YouTube.

ISD’s Kata Balint will join a panel of experts at the 7th annual Prague Populism Conference on 15-17 May to discuss climate change in relation to populist political parties and movements across Europe. Registration for the conference is now open.

ISD’s Young Cities programme gathered young people in Zuienkerke, Belgium, in early April to work on building skills to address discrimination and anti-social behaviour in their communities. The four-day event, a Youth Innovation Lab workshop, was delivered in collaboration with local partner Roots vzw.

This was the first time Young Cities has operated in Belgium, and the expansion was undertaken with support from Belgium's US Embassy.
