Black Forest Bar Cup (London Stories)

When: Monday, June 13, 2022 // 17:00 - 23:00
Where: Juno Rooms (67-69 Watling St, London EC4M 9DD)

This year I (Craig) will be the emcee of the Black Forest Bar Cup's "London Stories" event on June 13th in the City of London. I'll be joined by my friends Willi Schoellmann, owner of Schoellmann's in Offenburg, Hank the DJ and other luminaries from our region. Our mission is to exhibit the flavors of the Black Forest to the London bartending community and make clear why this region is so deserving of their attention.

"Like Cognac or Bordeaux! Black Forest, beyond gateaux!" - Duncan McRae

If you are a London bartender or a bartender who will be visiting London at this time, there are just 50 spots available, so REGISTER NOW!

Who's spinning records this weekend?

Friday (06.05) - DJ Oliver Wulff, laying down vinyl sides coated with funk, soul, disco and hip-hop. You can check out a recording of his show on Querfunk called Phonosoul. 19:00 - 22:00.

Saturday (07.05) - DJ Jens Galler brings his suitcase full of calypso, exotica, rhythm & blues, rock 'n' roll, soul, whipped cream and other delights! The perfect soundtrack for a special cocktail hour! We call it, the Forbidden Bongo Bar! 19:00 - 22:00.

Fire sale! €4,50 until it's gone!

We have a beautiful, fat keg of Cloudwater Volley West Coast IPA sitting in line behind this, ready to rock. But we've got to blow this baby first and there's still a good few pours left. So, do you good deed for the day and drink a fantastic beer at a reduced price so we can get at that Cloudwater!

Tonight: Cocktail Harbor, Vol. 5

Smooth hits from the 70s with sing-along favorites like Rupert Holmes' Escape (The Piña Colada Song), groove-laden jazz workouts like Herbie Hancock's Watermelon Man and the supremely 'riffable' I Wish from Stevie Wonder's classic Songs in the Key of Life album, to name but a few. See you tonight. Live music starts at 19:00!

Typical 80s Movie: CIA Space Lasers

In my personal canon of 80s movies, Real Genius (1985) is one of those titles that I have watched over and over. Set on the campus of "Pacific Tech", a science and engineering university similar to Caltech (or perhaps KIT), we find Chris Knight (Val Kilmer) working on his senior thesis: a chemical laser. Given the time period and its cold war backdrop, there are darker forces at play to take advantage of this innocent genius.

But don't worry, it's pretty funny! And we have cocktails and vinyl before the movie in Kinemathek's main foyer. So come on, KIT engineers! You can tell us what's accurate and what's not!

Sitting on the Terrace (aka, Werderplatz)

Things seem pretty chill lately, but we do still have this crane set up next to us and will have for the next 4-6 weeks. But what are we gonna do? Get all crazy? Take hostages? This isn't a Bruce Willis movie (sadly), this is real life. And so we just have to get on with it. Yes, it's inconvenient, but I must say we're in a better position than our neighbors at ROSA. At least for the moment. At some point our own house will have a crane sitting in front of it. Again. And we'll just have to deal with that when it comes along, as well.

For now we'll open our terrace from 15:00 regularly on Saturday and Sunday. During the week we'll just have to see how it goes. But for sure we'll be open from 17:00 when the workers knock off for the day.
