When it comes to selecting applicants in today’s marketplace, it’s time to take a closer look at your job descriptions, especially the section where you are requiring college degrees and years of experience. Are these requirements really necessary?
Rather than educational obtainment being a requirement, employers should focus on the competencies needed for the candidate to successfully perform the job. Of course, there are many professions, such as those in the medical field, that require certified credentials, but what about supervisor and manager positions? GCHR Leadership Consultant Becky Rogers, who is also a professor of Human Resources Management at Louisiana State University, often hears her students say, “I am working on my college degree because, although I’m currently doing the job, I cannot officially get the manager title without a degree.”
The same thought process should be considered when requiring years of experience. Does the candidate have ten years of experience or only one year of experience ten times?
