2020-2021 Annual Report
A Letter from CEO Anissa Listak
NCTR is excited to announce the release of our 2020-2021 Annual Report, which shows that the teacher residency movement is continuing to grow in scale and impact, but perhaps most importantly, in its commitment to equity.

With the tenacity of our NCTR community -- staff, residency program partners, funders, and other stakeholders -- we continue to make a significant impact. We are pleased to report that the number, mean and median enrollment of teacher residents in NCTR Network residency programs has increased. Network programs enrolled 2,025 teacher residents in 2022, the highest number of residents to date, and 57% of those residents identified as people of color. NCTR partner programs are making strides recruiting, preparing and retaining high-quality teachers and teachers of color.

On behalf of the NCTR Team, thank you to our partner programs for all you do for our collective community. The past couple of years have been very challenging, and in spite of those challenges, enrollment in teacher residency programs has increased as a result of your commitment to the residency model, teachers and students.

Thank you to our funders for your ongoing support of our mission to recruit, prepare and retain candidates of color seeking to become teachers through the residency model. Your support means more than ever before.

Warmly,
Anissa
Below is a snapshot of our annual report. The full NCTR 2020-2021 Annual Report is available on our website.
The national teacher residency movement is growing.

In 2022, NCTR's teacher residency programs extended their reach with 46 programs across 26 states. The number of NCTR applicants, teacher residents and graduates of the residency programs have increased over the years, solidifying the growth and impact of NCTR.
Residency programs continue to prepare effective teachers, and residency graduates stay in the classroom.

Based on a survey submitted by 700 teacher residents and 504 graduates who are part of NCTR's Network residency programs, both audiences report that the program effectively prepared them for their roles in the classroom. More than 200 principals also favorably rated the preparation of teacher residents and graduates significantly high, particularly when compared to typical first-year teachers.
Residencies prepare teachers of color to educate and inspire students of color.

Serving candidates of color continues to be a priority for NCTR's Network residency programs, with 57 percent of teacher residents who identify as a person of color (POC) -- surpassing the only 22 percent of teachers who identify as a person of color nationally.*
  • 57% of teacher residents enrolled for 2021-2022 identify as a POC
  • 38% of teacher mentors working with residents for 2021-2022 identify as a POC
  • 20 residency programs received Black Educators Initiative (BEI) grants (2021-2022)

Residency programs benefit the entire community particularly students from historically marginalized communities.

Teacher residents are meeting the needs of the field as well as serving underserved students and contributing to the good and growth of entire communities.
