We arrive on this the Fourth Sunday of Easter with the stories of Jesus' resurrection ringing in our ears. For the first three Sundays of Easter, we have seen Jesus encounter his grief stricken and troubled disciples, speaking their names and meeting them in their place of need. Jesus healed sorrow for Mary, doubt for Thomas, spoke words of forgiveness for Peter.

We might expect this Sunday to hear another resurrection story, but we find ourselves, instead, in the Tenth Chapter of John's Gospel, where Jesus helps us ponder our own relationship with the risen Christ. How will Jesus meet us? How will he tend to our struggles, our frailties, our sins? Jesus appeals to our imaginations, giving us the image of a shepherd. 'I am the Good Shepherd,' he says. This shepherd knows our names, knows our identities, knows our deepest needs. And Jesus, exploring this image further, speaks of us. This shepherd’s sheep hear his voice.
We might wonder about this Jesus who knows us so well. We might wonder how we might learn to hear his voice, through the scriptures, through the beautiful music of our organ and choir, through prayers, through the sacrament of the Eucharist, perhaps even through silence.
May we hear Jesus our Shepherd speaking our names as we gather for worship this Sunday.

"Do not let your hearts be troubled..."
If you have 20 minutes, go to St Peter's Cathedral Facebook page and listen to the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, discussing John 14:1-6 with Professor David Ford in an online Bible Study. This famous passage contains Jesus' final words to his disciples on the eve of his death: "Do not let your hearts be troubled..." They are words of comfort. In this troubled world, they are words we need to hear again.

Collecting bread tags
Further to last week's notice, The Friends Of St Peter's Cathedral project of collecting plastic bread-bag tags gets under way today. There is a receptacle on the back table of the cathedral for plastic bread tags and also a glass jar is on the front counter in the Cathedral Office for plastic bread tags. This is a 12-month project. Recently the charity presented the 61st wheelchair to a patient in South Africa. Let's all combine to make this project a success, and make good use of recycled plastic bread tags. On Facebook search "aussie bread tags for wheelchairs," also "Transmutation Robe."
