Matt Watroba

WA: Mary Lou Wiegand

Mothers Day - featuring Live Music*

We are thrilled to welcome Matt Watroba back to CUUB to lead a special service on Mother’s Day! Matt is a veteran performer, teacher, radio host, song writer…the list goes on but what Matt prefers to be known as is a community singer, song leader and educator. Matt sings and writes songs of compassion, inner strength, humor and every day living…a perfect way to celebrate all people who have nurtured their friends, families and communities. Matt brings a unique set of talents as an educator, performer and master of ceremonies. His passion for bringing community together through music and education is infectious.

A special offering will be taken to support Ukraine refugees. The money raised will be contributed to the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee.  Click this link to learn more about the UUSC: https://www.uusc.org/about-uusc/

CUUBies – Sunday, May 8th is a perfect time to reach out to friends or acquaintances who may be “UU Curious” and encourage them to attend services – live or on zoom, to experience Matt’s special combination of music and humor. It’s bound to be a most entertaining and enlightening service.

*Note that corvid protocols for this service are being modified to allow for more people in the sanctuary.  Social distancing may not be possible during this service.  Because if this masks should be worn all the time you are in the building except for those participating in the service and for those sharing joys & sorrows (while they are at the microphone).  Singing while masked is allowed.

Minister’s Corner

In a week’s time, I’ll be on a plane to Detroit.  I’m so much looking forward to visiting CUUB in person, and being there for your Annual Meeting!  Scheduled arrival into Brighton is the evening of Friday, May 13, and I’ll leave again late morning on Thursday the 19th.

There were times this year when we wondered if this would ever be possible, but in the last few months everything seemed to line up.  A few weeks ago, the end of mask requirements on airplanes gave me pause, but I’ve had my second COVID booster, will wear an N95 mask while traveling, and plan to be very cautious in other ways.  I also plan to be masked and/or socially distanced at many CUUB events - not so much to protect myself, but to protect others.

You’ll find detailed information about the schedule below.  I am also delighted to have lunch at CUUB with anyone who brings their own “brown bag.” No need to sign up for the lunches.

When disagreement or conflict arises in your life, how do you manage it?  Do you have a range of possible responses, or do you tend to stick with one approach?

Veteran church consultant Speed B. Leas (yes, that’s his real name), identifies six ways people approach conflict:  they Persuade, Compel, Avoid/Accommodate, Collaborate, Negotiate, or Support.  Each of these tactics works some of the time; none of them is useful all the time.  It’s helpful for each of us to develop a repertoire of responses.

On Monday, May 16, from 6 to 8 p.m., I’ll offer a two-hour workshop (platform to be determined) based on a short book by Dr. Leas, Discover Your Conflict Management Style.  This book has been very helpful to me over the years, and I think you’ll find it useful as well.

There’s some advance work, taking no more than an hour, for those who attend: completing and scoring a Conflict Inventory at the back of the book.  If you have time, feel free to read the book as well, but please complete and score the Inventory first!

Jeanette Darbe (vp@cuub.org) has 14 copies; they’ll be given free of charge to the first 14 people who sign up for the workshop.  If we run out, copies can also be ordered from on-line sources.

Social Justice at CUUB

Jim Dowd & Lee Anzicek will be chairing a fundraiser at CUUB on Saturday, June 11th for Voters Not Politicians to "Promote the Vote" and secure voters' rights.

-CUUB will be partnering with Indivisible Livingston to sponsor a private  viewing of the movie, "Who We Are. A Chronicle of Racism in America",

at the Historic Howell Theater on May 19th at 7pm. In this powerful movie, Jeffery Robinson exposes how deeply encoded white supremacy and oppression
of Black Americans is in our nation's history. His words lay bare an all-but-forgotten past, as well as our shared responsibility to create a better country in our lifetime.

To watch the trailer click this link:  Trailer of Who We Are- A Chronicle of Racism in America    A $5.00 donation is suggested and masks will be required.

*Voting Rights, Reproductive Rights, Credit for Good Behavior and Raise the Wage petitions will be available to sign before and after the movie.

-CUUB is now an official business partner of Livingston Diversity Council. We hope lots of CUUBies will join us in supporting the events they have planned for PRIDE next month!

With the leak of the impending SCOTUS decision, the alarms have been sounded! Due to a 1931 law that is still on our books, the moment that Roe is overturned, abortion will become a felony offense in Michigan. NOW is the moment for all of us to work to enshrine reproductive rights in the Michigan Constitution!

The Michigan Unitarian Universalists Social Justice Network (MUUSJN) has been partnering with Fems for Democracy to work on the Reproductive Freedom For All ballot initiative. We are also working on Promote the Vote, Raise the Wage and Good Time (criminal justice) ballot initiatives.

Can you help? Whether you can collect 5 signatures or 500, we need your help!

Please sign up here:

 https://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040e48a4ac2ba3fe3-ballot1

Shortly after you sign up, you will get the contact informatio for the petition distributor who lives closest to you.

If you are unable to collect signatures, we are also in need of people to help verify signatures. This is basic data entry and can be done from your own home. This is a great way to help if you don’t live in Michigan or can’t collect signatures for any other reason. To volunteer, please contact: Nomi Joyrich nomijoyrich@gmail.com 248-497-1226

Let’s make the SCOTUS leak be the battle cry we need to mobilize!

Together, we can do great things,

CUUB COVID Precautions & Building Entrance Policy

Revised April 21, 2022

As a community grounded in covenant - grounded in our promises to one another within the context of community - we will be approaching this new health and safety expectation as a covenantal understanding.

In the spirit of allowing all our members and friends to gather safely, in-person, in community, we are adopting the following (temporary) policy with regards to building entry and use:

The following precautions apply to all meetings, services, and events that take place on CUUB property:

  • Masking is required indoors for everyone over the age of 2 when walking around in the building. Once seated, masks can be removed unless singing. Beverages are fine when seated.

  • Hand sanitizer and extra masks will be readily available throughout the building.

  • Wrist bands are available to communicate comfort level with interaction with others. Green means approaching, shaking hands and hugging are fine; Yellow means talking together is fine but no physical touch; Red means distance yourself to talk and no physical touch.

Additional Restrictions, Precautions and Recommendations:

  • Sanctuary seating is pre-set with chair groups for social distancing of 6 feet.

  • When speaking from the podium during joys and sorrows masks may be removed and replaced when returning to your seat.

  • The Cantor may sing from the podium without a mask providing a covid test is done on the day of the service and is negative.

***In-person attendance is strictly a personal choice and as such, each individual is ultimately responsible for their conduct and personal safety.

These expectations will be posted on CUUB’s entryways. Otherwise, CUUB is following the current local, state, and CDC Recommended Guidelines.

Thank you for your intended cooperation and grace to keep our CUUB Community safe and well!
