Collection update May 6th, 2022

Dear Japanese art enthusiast,

Two days before finally being allowed back into Japan again, after 28 months of not having access to the auctions in Tokyo and Kyoto, I announce a sizeable update of my new acquisitions.

Please find here a group of surimono, Yoshitoshi moon prints, late Kunisada actor prints and a miscellany of mostly affordable Meiji prints.
Also I am happy to announce the arrival of 14 aquatints by the contemporary artist Noriwaki Miyamoto in the last week of May. His abstract architectural designs are characterized by incredibly warm colours and complete human absence.

In the week following my return from Japan the prints will be available on our website and in our gallery. Here a sneak peak:
Please note, that during my trip to Japan, it is advisable to visit the gallery by appointment. I will be back in my gallery in Leiden on May 20th.
Exhibitions update

Shin hanga at
  • Museum für Ostasiatische Kunst in Cologne - Germany.
  • Japan Museum SieboldHuis in Leiden - The Netherlands.
  • Royal Museum of Art and History in Brussels - Belgium.
Hotei has curated a huge travelling exhibition on Shin hanga from two of the biggest private Dutch collections and from the holdings of the Watanabe Publishing Company in Tokyo.

The first venue of this exhibition at the Museum für Ostasiatische Kunst in Cologne contains 220 items and is the most comprehensive Shin hanga exhibition ever staged in Europe. This exhibition at this venue is open until June 6th 2022.

Wonderful landscapes by Hasui, Shinsui, Shiro, Koitsu, Yoshida and others are flanked by the most important prints of beauties by Goyo, Kotondo and Shinsui.

The stern faces of the actor prints by Shunsen and Koka are followed by the fragile prints of nature by Sozan and Koson.

In short: an exhibition not to be missed.
This exhibition will then travel to Leiden, to Japan Museum SieboldHuis where a slightly reduced exhibition of 125 prints will be on show from June 17th 2022 until September 11th 2022.

In fall the entire exhibition will be shown at the Royal Museum of Art and History in Brussels from October 14th 2022 until January 15th 2023.
Shin hanga catalogue.
We have written a hardbound catalogue illustrating all items in the Shin hanga exhibition with the Belgian publisher Ludion, known for its high quality art books. The book has been published in four languages and is widely available:

Shin Hanga De nieuwe prenten van Japan. (Dutch)
Shin Hanga: The New Prints of Japan. (English)
Shin-hanga Der moderne Farbholzschnitt Japans. (German)
Shin hanga. Les estampes modernes du Japon. (French)
