~by Michael Wilcox

Assistant Director and Program Leader for Community Development / Purdue Extension
Associate Director / North Central Regional Center for Rural Development (NCRCRD)

In a nutshell, we proved the adage that “home is where the heart is…” However, we also learned that conventional thinking would not help communities achieve their goals.

Here’s what happened…

Live Well Daviess County Creating a Difference
Article by Mike Grant, Staff Writer
Saturday, April 16, 2022 6:00 PM
Live Well Daviess County has also been involved in an effort to help the community work with and understand its immigrant community. That group has expressed concerns about access to housing and medical care.

Purdue Extension Community Development Director Cindy Barber told the joint commissioners-council meeting that there are also a number of health initiatives underway including an updated health assessment.

“It’s exciting,” Barber told the county officials. “We kind of get down in the work and we realize we don’t communicate as much as we should. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to share that with you.”

BR&E Next Steps

~by Heather Strohm, Regional Educator in Community Development, Purdue Extension

Over the past several months, my column has provided an overview of all five of the Business Retention & Expansion Program (BR&E) modules and discussed the Business Retention & Expansion process. The BR&E process includes establishing a Task Force, creating and conducting readiness assessments, and leading company visits guided by data-driven decision-making. After each of these components was used, the Task Force members recognized the value in analyzing critical data while delineating themes and important trends in the body of the final report.

Workshops to Improve your Business' Online Presence and Increase Sales

In 2017, Extension Community Development and the Purdue Center for Regional Development (PCRD) sought a way to help Indiana small businesses enhance their online presence. Together they created the Digital Ready Businesses program, hosting numerous hands-on training sessions through educational workshops. Now, in 2022, the program has been updated to add new content that reflect current trends. The twelve workshops are available to teach entrepreneurs and small business owners strategies on how to create a digital ready business.

The Residential Share of Property Taxes is on the Rise

~by Dr. Larry DeBoer
March 30, 2022

Here’s one way to think about property taxes: The local government sets its budget, subtracts all other tax revenue, and raises the remainder with the property tax levy. The assessor measures the value of all the parcels of taxable property inside the boundaries of the government. Then the government measures the share of each parcel in total assessed value. That is the share of the levy that the owners must pay.
In other words, your property’s share in the total value of property is your share of the property tax levy. We use property value shares to divvy up responsibility for funding local government.

Welcome Andrea Hatfield!
Andrea grew up on a very traditional farm in southern Indiana. They raised corn, soybeans, and wheat, as well as Angus and Hereford cattle. Her family always had a large garden, which is where Andrea discovered her love of watching plants grow. She was active in 4-H in Dubois County, in addition to several other extracurricular activities. Surprised at how little some of her friends knew about agriculture, and determined to change that, she earned her BS in Agriculture Education and her MS in Curriculum and Instruction from Purdue University.

Some of you may be thinking her name sounds familiar, and you would be correct. After graduating from Purdue, Andrea accepted a position as the 4-H/Youth Extension Educator in Hamilton County. She worked there for almost 6 years before her family moved out of state. Andrea stayed involved in Extension, volunteering as a 4-H leader with her kids’ 4-H clubs.

Fast forward several years and the opportunity arose to move back to Indiana. Andrea, her husband, David, and her two kids, Lauren and Drew, now live on a small farm in the Brownsburg area where they raise hay, cattle, and microgreens, and Andrea can enjoy her own large garden. She is excited to be back with her Extension family!
