May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month! Access Updated Outreach Resources to Share with Your Community!

The CDC Division of Vector-Borne Diseases has developed several new resources for Spring 2022 related to Lyme disease communication. These resources are effective tools your program can use to spread the word on tick bite prevention and Lyme disease facts during this year's Lyme Disease Awareness Month.

The 2022 summer season is quickly approaching! We have a few announcements for the network as our program ramps up for the 2022 season.

Needs Assessment Survey
Please take a moment to complete our 2022 pesticide use & resistance survey. Your responses help us tailor our program services to the needs of control districts across the region.

Submission System
We are pleased to announce that the NEVBD Pesticide Resistance Monitoring Program will be accepting submissions for resistance testing starting May 23, 2022. You can order your submission kits now and throughout the summer. To receive a submission kit please send order forms to pesticide@cornell.edu

2022 CDC West Nile Virus Forecasting Challenge

Announcing the 2022 CDC West Nile virus (WNV) Forecasting Challenge is open for participation. This is an open forecasting challenge to predict the total number of WNV neuroinvasive disease cases in U.S. counties during the 2022 calendar year. Initial forecast due April 30, 2022, with additional optional forecasts due May 31, June 30, and July 31, 2022. Email vbd-predict@cdc.org for more information and to register a modeling team. AMCA Research Fund, Request for Pre-Proposals

The American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA) Research Fund invites new pre-proposals for research on mosquito control and related topics for funding for calendar year 2023. The AMCA Research Fund is devoted to funding research that will lead to new tools and strategies for mosquito surveillance and control and ultimately protecting the public from mosquito-borne disease and discomfort from mosquito bites. Deadline for pre-proposals is Friday June 24, 2022.

Vector-Borne Disease in the News

First Case of Powassan Virus in Connecticut, 2022

Health officials in Connecticut are urging residents to take precautions to avoid tick bites after documenting the first case of Powassan virus disease in the state this year. A man in his 50s was diagnosed with Powassan virus in late March 2022. The man was hospitalized with central nervous system disease, but has since been released to recover at home. From 2017 to 2021, 12 cases of the virus were reported in Connecticut, including three in 2021. Of those 12 cases, two were fatal.

Companion Animal Parasite Council Releases 2022 Annual Pet Parasite Forecasts

The Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) releases an annual forecast each spring highlighting areas at risk of exposure of companion animals to vector-borne diseases in the US. These forecasts are supported by ongoing research by parasitologists and statisticians in leading academic institutions across the country. In their 2022 forecast, CAPC notes pathogens that cause heartworm disease, Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, and anaplasmosis continue to spread throughout the US. Forecasts are available on the CAPC website

Results from Cary Institute Tick Project Published

The Tick Projectdirected by Rick Ostfeld and Felicia Keesing, was a five-year study to determine if it is possible to kill enough ticks across neighborhoods to reduce the incidence of Lyme and other tick-borne disease in people and pets. Findings of this study were published this week in Emerging Infectious Diseases. The interventions evaluated in this project did not result in a significant difference in incidence of human tick-borne diseases, but did significantly reduce incidence in pets.

Heluna Health (HH) and the Vector-Borne Disease Section (VBDS) of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) are recruiting for the position of a Biologist for the National Park Service, Vector-Borne Disease Project. The Biologist position is a contract position responsible for working with VBDS Public Health Biologists to conduct prevention, surveillance, and control of vector-borne diseases in Yosemite and Lassen Volcanic National Parks and other regions in California. The Scientific Program Director (SPD) oversees laboratory operations to ensure accurate and consistent surveillance and testing procedures. Assistant Professor - Mosquito Biologist/Ecologist, UC Riverside

The Department of Entomology at the University of California invites applicants for an Assistant Professor to develop an innovative, field-oriented, research program on the population dynamics and community ecology of mosquitoes. Research should focus on mosquito population biology and ecology, and include studying aquatic habitats in urban, agricultural and natural areas. Research may also include studies on the epidemiology of mosquito-transmitted pathogens of humans. Collaborative research efforts with vector control districts, state and county public health agencies or international health agencies are also strongly encouraged. Teaching responsibilities may include participation in aquatic entomology, vector biology and ecology, and medical/veterinary entomology courses, as well as supervision of graduate students. The Department of Infectious Diseases in the College of Veterinary Medicine and the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory (SREL) at the University of Georgia invite applications for a joint appointment, tenure-track Assistant Professor in the area of vector ecology. NEW: Postdoctoral Scholar, MacDonald Disease Ecology Lab, UC Santa Barbara

The MacDonald disease ecology lab at UC Santa Barbara is recruiting a postdoctoral scholar to work on a NSF EEID funded project (DEB-2011147) investigating effects of land use change on vector-borne disease. The postdoc work with Dr. Andrew MacDonald in the Bren School, with opportunities for interaction with faculty in disease ecology, earth systems science and data science across the campus. The postdoc will collaborate and interact with other project PI’s based at Stanford University (Dr. Erin Mordecai – Dept. of Biology, Dr. Lisa Mandle – Natural Capital Project, and Dr. Eric Lambin – Earth System Science), and at Universidad Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru (Dr. Willy Lescano). Update - Postdoctoral Position, Barker Lab, UC Davis - Apply by 5/13

The Davis Arbovirus Research and Training (DART) Lab at the University of California, Davis seeks a postdoctoral researcher to develop web-based data analysis and visualization tools to support public-health and vector-control decisions in California and other U.S. states. The position will work as part of the Vector-borne Disease Surveillance (VectorSurv) team, along with local, state, and federal partner agencies, to develop data tools for the VectorSurv online data system (https://vectorsurv.org and https://maps.vectorsurv.org). Responsibilities will include (1) designing processes and writing code to integrate diverse data sources, including data on climate, land use, human demographics, and vector surveillance and control, (2) developing predictive models for vector abundance and vector-borne disease risk, (3) working with the programming team to automate models for use in VectorSurv’s web applications, and (4) writing manuscripts describing findings. ORISE Fellowship, Entomology & Ecology, CDC-DVBD Bacterial Diseases Branch

The selected fellowship participant will participate primarily in laboratory studies related to tick and tick-borne pathogen biology, surveillance and control. the selected participant will gain experience in pathogen detection in ticks using established protocols (DNA extraction, real-time PCR, sequencing) and one or more of the following: Tick identification using published taxonomic keys and molecular assays designed to differential morphologically similar species; Field collection of ticks; Maintaining records in electronic databases; Mapping and modeling tick distributions within a GIS framework; Assay development, research on tick/pathogen control methods, enzootic maintenance of Lyme disease spirochetes, laboratory-based vector competency/transmission efficiency studies, and/or flea identification and associated fieldwork. Postdoctoral Positions, Askoy Lab, Yale University

We are inviting motivated Postdoctoral Scientists to join our group to study the physiology, and the molecular and genetic mechanisms involved in host-pathogen interactions in the tsetse fly-African trypanosome system. We study the role of the fly immune system and the influences of tsetse’s endosymbiotic bacteria in the parasite infection process. The successful candidate will likely have (a) a recent (4-years) PhD degree in entomology, microbiology or immunology or a related discipline; (b) a track record of research productivity , as evidenced by first authored original publications in high quality peer-reviewed journals; (c) experience in–omics based technologies, and parasite or insect cultures; and (d) experience with BSL2 procedures. Postdoctoral Positions, Vector-Borne Disease Ecology and Control, Texas A&M

Postdoctoral Position, Vector Genomics Biology, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health

The Norris laboratory, located in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, is seeking a highly motivated individual for a postdoctoral position focusing on mosquito vector genomics and biology. The Norris laboratory is interested in understanding genetic diversity and molecular markers/barcodes that can be used to confirm mosquito identity. The laboratory Invertebrate Vectors of Disease and Public Health lead by Dr. Estelle Martin
in the Entomology and Nematology Department at the University of Florida is seeking to fill several academic positions:
  • PhD student to use cell culture, quantitative Real-Time PCR and Next generation sequencing
    to assess the virome composition of major mosquito vectors including Aedes aegypti, Aedes
    albopictus
    and Culex quinquefasciatus.
  • MS student to evaluate alternative mosquito control strategies. In particular, the student will assess the impact of the In2Care mosquito traps on container breeding mosquitoes including Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus and Culex quinquefasciatus by measuring entomological outcomes including adult and immature densities

Ticks and Tick-Borne Pathogens Open Community Webinar Series

This is a joint VEuPathDB and BV-BRC open community webinar series focusing on ticks and the bacterial, viral or eukaryotic pathogens they transmit. The webinars will focus on highlighting data and bioinformatic tools provided by the NIAID bioinformatic resource centers, VEuPathDB and BV-BRC. Eight webinars will be held on a bi-weekly basis starting on March 8th , 2022. Each webinar will focus one specific data, tools and functionality provided by these NIAID-funded bioinformatic resource centers. ESA Launches IPM Certificate Program

Pest management professionals can jumpstart their careers through the Certified Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Technician credential from the Entomological Society of America Certification Corp. Designed for professionals with less than five years’ experience in pest management, the Certified IPM Technician (CIT) credential demonstrates a foundational skillset and commitment to the IPM principles and practices. Applications for the credential are now being accepted by the ESA Certification Corp.

2022 Biology of Vector-Borne Diseases Course, UIdaho

The Institute for Health in the Human Ecosystem hosts the annual Biology of Vector-borne Diseases six-day course. The fourth annual Biology of Vector-borne Disease course is scheduled for Monday through Saturday, June 13-18, 2022. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance and invited to register for the course. The course registration fee (USD $1,500) includes housing, meals, course materials and social activities. Web-based Global Directory of Medical Entomology Courses

TDR has supported the development of a Global Atlas of Medical Entomology Schooling (GAMES), which lists a total of 126 medical entomology courses offered both on-campus and through distance learning in 32 countries across all WHO regions, covering seven languages.
