Welcome to Camp Carsen! We are so excited to be back fully in person this year for Summer Reading 2022: Read Beyond the Beaten Path. We'd love to have you participate in the Summer Reading Challenge, where you read to earn prizes, and attend some of the wide variety of programs for all ages with us this year. ~ Your DCLD Programming Staff

Family/All Age Programs

Butterfly Encounter with Absolute Science
Encounter and feed live butterflies in a magical experience with Absolute Science's butterfly tents. Browse the interactive stations to learn about the butterfly life-cycle, choose a butterfly flower feeder, and spend time surrounded by these beautiful insects inside the tents. No registration required.

Family Camp
Join Jenn and Kayla for campfire songs and treats Friday evening and for breakfast, camp crafts, and activities Saturday morning. We have reserved Camp Site 6 at Bankston Park and will have a limited number of spots reserved for families to set up tents and camp overnight for free. You are welcome to come just for the Friday evening campfire, just for the Saturday morning activities, to come to both Friday and Saturday events but not camp overnight, or stay for the entire event including camping. No library staff will be on site at the park overnight. Registration required.

Family Hike with Dubuque County Conservation
Meet up with Jenn and a guide from the Dubuque County Conservation Board at New Wine Park. Bring a lunch to enjoy at the end of the hike. A map of the park will be emailed to all participants prior to the hike. Registration required.

Family Karaoke
Grab a mic and the spotlight and belt out your favorite pop songs, Disney tunes, and other melodies, and enjoy treats while you listen with the whole family. No registration required.

Fonziba Drums
Join Fonziba to learn about the culture of South Africa and the art of African drumming. Fonziba will bring thirty djembe hand drums and three dundun drums that you can learn to play. The drum lessons will be followed by time to browse Fonziba's interactive, hands-on South Africa display. Registration required.

Geocache Hunt
Following coordinates on a GPS or smartphone, see if you can find a hidden treasure and get some exercise while you're doing it! Families are welcome, or kids 3rd grade and up can bring a signed permission slip from a parent/guardian to attend without an adult. No registration required.

Library Pen Pals and Kick-off Events
The Library Pen Pals program will run all summer. Fill out a questionnaire about your personality and interests at the front desk of any Dubuque County Library branches and get paired with a reading buddy. Attend a kick-off to decorate a card for your pen pal. No registration for the kick-offs required.

Tale Trail Hike and Trail Mix Bar
