Ezra Keshet and Steve Abney Present Poster at GLOW 45 Colloquium

The 45th Generative Linguistics in the Old World (GLOW) Colloquium took place at Queen Mary University of London, April 27-29 in a hybrid format. Ezra Keshet and Steven Abney presented a poster titled “A static plural logic for e-type phenomena.”

Natasha Abner and Demet Kayabaşı Publish Paper in Frontiers in Psychology

Natasha Abner (left) and PhD student Demet Kayabaşı co-authored a paper published April 26 in the journal Frontiers in Psychology. Their paper is titled “On the Reflexive KENDİ in Turkish Sign Language.”

Jeff Heath Gives Series of Online Lectures on Cognitive Linguistics

Jeff Heath recently gave a series of online lectures on cognitive linguistics (as he states: “the cognitive linguistics that really is cognitive!”) to students at Jilin University in China. Jeff says “there’s nothing like mental space blends and idealized cognitive models to cheer up students who were in total COVID lockdown!”

Michicagoan Conference in Linguistic Anthropology

Graduate students Anna Whitney and Promise McEntire (Linguistic Anthropology), served as members of the planning committee for the annual Michicagoan Graduate Student Conference in Linguistic Anthropology. The conference was held in a hybrid format May 6-7, with the in-person component taking place at the University of Michigan. A keynote address was given by Michel DeGraff, Professor of Linguistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Director of the MIT-Haiti Initiative.

Alan Ke, Andrew McInnerney, and Yushi Sugimoto Present Paper at GLOW 45

Linguistics alumnus Alan Ke, PhD candidate Andrew McInnerney, and Yushi Sugimoto (PhD 2022) co-authored a paper titled “Lack of c-command in coordinate structures: Evidence from binding” presented at the 45th Generative Linguistics in the Old World (GLOW) Colloquium on April 28.

Capstone Videos Explore Origins of Human Language

In lieu of the traditional capstone poster session, undergraduate students in the winter semester of Ling 497 created fun, informal videos on the origin of human language, one of the topics covered in the course. Each ten-minute video, presented by one to three students, discusses an angle for thinking about language origins—encompassing gesture, laughter, articulation, ideophones, syntax, creoles, and song. 2022 Matt Alexander Award

This year’s recipient of the Matt Alexander Award for a Linguistics Honors Thesis is senior Grace Brown. The title of Grace’s thesis is “First impressions: Influences of gender expectations on perception of English sibilants." Congratulations, Grace!

Camp Looking Glass Summer Counselor Positions Open

In addition to her faculty position at U-M, Natasha Abner is also a volunteer director at a summer camp program for people with disabilities in Mississippi. The camp is currently recruiting new counselors for its 2022 camp session. Camp Looking Glass is a non-profit that provides year-round recreational activities and free sleepaway summer camps for people with disabilities deep in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. Our program is entirely volunteer-run and no one pays anything to participate. We have limited openings for new volunteers for our 2022 summer camp session and we'd love to bring you into the Camp family! Funding may be available to help cover travel costs to Mississippi. Our new volunteer application can be downloaded here, and you can also find out more about us by visiting www.CampLookingGlass.org or checking out our YouTube channel.
