The municipal election campaign begins

With everyone concentrating on the provincial election, it seems strange to be talking about an election that will take place in October. However, we all know how quickly you can be left behind when following City Hall.

There's an important meeting next week

The Good Governance Group is a recently-organized association of Stratford citizens who are concerned about the state of our municipal government. They will be gathering online next week to discuss past difficulties and, hopefully, future improvements in the way we run our city. It's an open meeting, and they are trying to attract citizens of all political stripes and perspectives.

The 2022 municipal election is crucial, and Get Concerned Stratford will be working hard to provide as much background and other information as we possibly can.

However, we will not support or endorse candidates. We will, on the other hand, support all efforts to foster a more open and democratic environment in Stratford.

Democracy is in a pretty sorry state right now. Perhaps we should all get together and talk about it.

The meeting is on Wednesday, May 11 at 7pm by Zoom. Use this link to register.

Climate Momentum questions provincial candidates

They have put together a selection of key questions and sent them to candidates in Perth-Wellington; watch their website to see the responses as they come in.

You may also want to look at the answers to Green Prosperity's set of questions. This survey was sponsored by Greenpeace, the Suzuki Foundation, Nature Ontario, Ontario Clean Air Alliance, and the Canadian Environmental Law Association.

Remember that it's easy and convenient to vote early. And don't forget to attend the debate!

Perth County Sustainability Hub

Stratford's survey for citizen input into updating the Transportation Master Plan has now closed, but the Perth County Hub is still collecting signatures for their petition urging the City to consider the environment in updating their plan. Stop and say hello to them at the Farmer's Market on Saturday, May 7, where they will be taking signatures from 10 am on.

Here's the complete text of the pledge:

Perth County’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Plan revealed that transportation causes 34% of our total emissions. Dealing with this problem is a pressing necessity.  We urge you to prioritize the recommendations made by our Climate Change Coordinators.

Councillor Cody Sebben will continue his informal online meetings with the public on Thursday, May 12, 7:30 - 8:30. Use this link to join. This is not an official city meeting; rather, it's a chance to talk with a councillor and learn more about the workings of City Hall.

The SDSS Plant sale starts at 9 am today! Don't walk, RUN down to the water tower parking lot!

Bravo to the Stratford and Area Master Gardeners!

They are doing such great work. Their native plant sale last weekend sold out in an hour!

They could use your help, though.
The Master Gardeners will be working with ReLeaf Stratford to plant small trees in TJ Dolan on May 17 between 9 – noon. Trees are in 1-gallon pots and are easy to manage. With  help, they will be able to plant 300 trees towards their goal of 2022 trees in Stratford and area in 2022.

If you can help, please e-mail releafstratford@gmail.com, so
that they have your contact information to provide details on where to
park and in case they need to arrange a rain date.
