Dear friends,

It’s been another one of those weeks, I am sorry to say. I finally tested negative – thank God, but it took until Thursday to do so. In the midst of it all, Iain, our operations manager tested positive and we were two men down – with Rosie on annual leave. Fortunately, she was able to rearrange parts of her holiday. But we all have to make sure she will get her deserved time off. And thank you to all who have written or reached out. It really is much appreciated.

This means that this e-news is even shorted than last weeks as I am only now catching up. The orders of services for the livestreams unfortunately haven’t been completed yet. I do have to do some prioritising right now…

But don’t let me stop this before saying thank you to all who contributed to Peter Brand’s memorial service and funeral. He will surely be missed and our hearts and prayers continue to go out to Sheelagh.

And one final thing: Let us pray for the elected members of our city council. :Let us also pray for those not elected. And let us give thanks for being able to participate in elections and also for those who make sure our election process is administered in a fair, democratic, and efficient way.

Please let me know, if you have any concerns or questions.

Yours as ever,
Markus

P.S. If you see me running around with a red four legged creature on a leash, please come and say “hello” to the newest resident of the rectory: Caleb, an 11-months old Labrador.

DIOCESAN BIG WALK TOWARDS NET ZERO 28 MAY 2022

Join us for the first gathering of Edinburgh Diocese for three years! We’re bringing together the themes from the Season of Pilgrimage and the commitment of the Scottish Episcopal Church to reach Net Zero carbon by 2030.  It’ll be quite a journey, so let’s start together…

In the morning (from 9.30am) we will travel together to St Mary’s Cathedral from the  four corners of Edinburgh:
Cycle in from South Queensferry
or walk along the Water of Leith
or from St James’ Balm Well, Liberton
or from St Mark’s, Portobello

Also gather at St Mary’s to discover accessible ways to pilgrimage without the long walks (from 10.30am)

From midday we gather at St Mary’s Cathedral
Lunch – bring your own (soup, tea and coffee provided)
Worship
Guest speakers – the ‘whys and whats’ of Net Zero:
Ruth Valerio, Environmentalist and theologian, social activist and author she is the Director of Global Advocacy and Influencing at Tearfund. See net
Robert Woodford, member of the SEC Provincial Environment Group, founder of consultancy Opus Earth (creator of our Energy Footprint Analyser) and the co-founder & director of Deep Time Walk Project.
Join us for the whole day or for as much as you can.
Please register your interest on our Eventbrite website and find more details on the morning walks/cycle on: bit.ly/BW2NZ or at: https://stjohns-edinburgh.org.uk/walk-for-net-zero/

ASCENSION DAY Holy Eucharist will be celebrated on 26 May (Ascension Day), at 8am, followed by breakfast. All are welcome!

70 TREES FOR THE JUBILEE You will know from a previous e-news that we hope we can collectively plant 70 trees to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this year. If you’re not able to physically plant a tree yourself (many of us, for example, don’t have gardens in which to do so) then why not add a tree to our grove in the Caledonian Forest? You can have as many trees as you wish planted and do so as a one-off or on a regular basis. Each tree costs just £6. Visit https://treesforlife.org.uk/groves/g7204/ to donate – please mention that you are planting for the St John’s Platinum Jubilee in the donation message. How is it coming along? Let us know!

GREEN GINGER GROUP (Green for Eco-justice and Ginger for ‘gingering up’ getting people involved) Eco-justice is still the most pressing concern for our age. If you would like to be involved with our eco-justice group called please contact its convenor Andrew Wright awwright64@outlook.com .

BAPTISM, CONFIRMATION, RECEPTION INTO THE ANGLICAN COMMUNION If you are interested in any of these, please speak to either Rosie rosie@stjohns-edinburgh.org.uk or Markus markus@stjohns-edinburgh.org.uk. If there are sufficient numbers, they will organise an Episcopal service to administer these rites at any time. On Pentecost Day this year the Bishop will be with us. This would be a great opportunity for baptism, confirmation, or reception into the Anglican Communion. If you are interested in any of these, please speak to Markus markus@stjohns-edinburgh.org.uk

WEDNESDAY LUNCH The next Wednesday lunch will be on 1 June at 12noon (note the change of time!) in the Cornerstone Centre. All are welcome.

ONE WORLD SHOP If you have a spare morning or afternoon once a week and have an interest in fair trade and like serving people, the One World Shop would love to hear from you. They are looking for new volunteers. You will receive full training on our till and all other operations. If interested please email: Ania@oneworldshop.co.uk

Please note that Markus’ and Rosie’s days off are Friday and Saturday. Please do contact any of the other clergy in case of emergency on those days. Rosie is on annual leave until 9 May and Markus is on annual leave from 12 May to 27 May.
