From the Head of School
Dear Gardner community,
With a few weeks left of school, our students are fully engaged in their learning- working on their writing pieces, diving deeply into projects, and counting down the days until it's summer. Students are comfortable in their classrooms, actively participating in their learning, and navigating friendships, conflicts, challenges, and successes that are a wonderful part of learning. I'm looking forward to seeing you at our end of the year in person events- where our students can share their learning and we can have a chance to connect with one another! The last few weeks of school can be busy, and our students will be supported in finishing the year strong.
As we move towards the end of the school year, it’s a good time to reflect on the changes, challenges, and successes we’ve all faced during this school year. I appreciate all of your contributions to this success, and invite you to share celebrations from your own child's experience at Gardner this year with our teachers and staff.
Grateful to be a part of Gardner with you all,

Program Spotlight
Garden Learning Highlights
|
|
|
The Gardner Garden provides opportunities for our students to learn first hand what it takes to grow food, support pollinators, and take care of our land. In Mazama, the students are learning about how plants grow and are tending to their own plants. With the help of a garden expert volunteer, our Wy'East students have been studying the soil to discover what unvierses lie beneath the ground, and our kindergarten students are incorporating art into their own garden planning and learning.

Meet the Teacher
Welcome to Gardner, Julia!
|
|
|
We are excited to announce our Wy'East (3rd/4th) teacher for the 22-23 school year! She brings a wealth of experience and excitement, and we're happy to welcome her to the community.
Julia Lazaroff’s classroom is a place where all are welcome and known. She prides herself on creating a classroom environment built on positive relationships, incorporating social emotional learning, and using strategies that support student-autonomy. Julia also specializes in Arts Integration, so you will find evidence of learning in the classroom by observing student artwork all around. Arts Integration allows Julia to teach and assess students in creative ways, which also leads to higher engagement and deeper learning.
Julia grew up in Wisconsin, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Ready for an adventure (and to escape those Wisconsin winters), she started her teaching career at a private school in Honolulu, Hawaii. After her husband’s time in the Navy concluded, it was time to settle somewhere, which is how they found themselves in Vancouver. During her time here in Washington, Julia has been teaching at a fully virtual school while also pursuing her master’s degree. Now, she is ready to return to the in-person classroom and comes to Gardner with a Master’s of Education in educational psychology from The University of Missouri.
When Julia is not teaching, you can find her exploring local coffee shops, baking yummy sweets, teaching herself how to sew, or out hiking with her dog, Cleo.

Learning in Action
Seeing the Arts in Action
|
|
Our 2nd grade students are set for several exciting experiential learning opportunities in the coming weeks, and last week they travelled to Portland to see the Oregon Children's Theater perform Last Stop on Market Street. This classic children's book shares the story of a boy and his nana as they ride the bus through their neighborhood, learning about others, finding joy and beauty in your surroundings, and be grateful. Connecting our students with the arts allows them to experience different ways of showing their creativity, and connects them to their community, too.
Thank you to all the parents who help by driving and chaperoning our learners on these field trips. Fun is had by all, and it couldn't happen without the support of families.

Keeping all of our students in school depends on our families following the requests below for screening for symptoms.
1. In the last 72 hours, has your child had one or more of the following symptoms: fever > 100.4 F, cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, chills, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea and/or vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of smell/taste?
2. Has your child been in close contact with anyone with confirmed COVID-19 or has a public health or medical professional told your child to self isolate or self-quarantine because of concerns about COVID-19 infection?
3. If any of the answers to these questions are yes, have you emailed health@gardnerschool.org and been cleared to be on campus? If not, please remain off campus until cleared.
