The Athens community is invited to acknowledge, celebrate, and honor Juneteenth by joining in a community-led, community-wide 19 Days of Juneteenth celebration. Town & Gown Players will participate on Saturday, June 4, 2022 with a showing of the taped performance of the play, Athens Vignettes by Dr. Roshaunda Breeden. The viewing will be in the Memorial Garden (outdoors) followed by an open discussion.
Town & Gown Players premiered Dr. Breeden’s Athens Vignettes: A Dialogue with the African American Community on October 15-17th and October 22-24th, 2021. The production was directed by Dr. Freda Scott Giles, Associate Professor of Theatre and the Institute for African American Studies at UGA. The play addresses Athens history as viewed in the present concerning Linnentown, the Baldwin Hall remains, the relationship between UGA and the Athens African American community, and the impact of urban renewal. Read coverage about the performance in the Athens Banner-Herald at this link.
Reservations are essential, as there will be only 50 seats. Register to attend the event by filling out the linked form below. The event is free of charge and will take place rain or shine.
